David: I think a car with 100K miles may be okay if it was maintained well and if you are a do-it-yourselfer. If you are going to take it in to have work done then you will probably be upside down real fast. The motor mounts, radiators, ect are not very high dollar items. The way the shifter works you will feel the movement of the engine if the torque arm bushings are bad. The bushings are in the dog-bone arm between the rear head and the chassis. |

Have the engine checked out for compression and possibly leakdown, the 3.2s have nikasil liners and are well sorted out 200k is possible if well maintained The condition is what most important, Ferraris have such a stigma if they have so called high miles, everyone wants a 20k car but many so called 30-40k mile cars are actually 80k cars, as JRV and other wrenches say speedo rollback is rampant, its too easy to rollback the speedo and makes too much of a difference in saleabilty or resale value, its hard to tell the true miles on a Ferrari that has over 30k if its been kept up

In this market no reason to buy a tired Mondy. How much do they want? Most of these regardless of condition have a low an high price range say low 20's to 30k. The cheapest cars in the long run are the best one's at the high end. Sounds like it will need a 30k service too which will set you back 3-5k depending what else they find. Do you like the color? Be picky, your paying for it. |

David, Is that the car at Tillack's. I happened to see it a few months back. Given the color and mileage, I'm thinking 20K is fair. It's been there a while. Dave |

Exactly Han, he did mention some of the stuff that had been previously serviced, radiator, water pump, coolant hoses, transaxle, but other things were left off. Since he didn't mention that they have been previously serviced, one would assume not. Perhaps he can clarify, but nothing beats an eyes on inspection and test drive by a Ferrari technician. |

Yeah, basically everything you mention is a concern. However, if the car was really well maintained, some of those parts - such as steering rack, suspension bushings, etc. - may have already been taken care of. I can't imagine a well maintained car not having some work done in these areas. I guess what I'm trying to say is that IF it is well maintained, it might be 'fresher' than you think. If none of these issues have ever been addressed, then you probably have lots of work to do on it. |

There are cars that have 140-150k miles, but I have not heard of more than that. We have a local member with 105k on a 328. Each car is unto it's own, so it is difficult to estimate the length of life on stuff. Waterpumps seem to go after 30 to 50k, but are easily rebuilt. Suspension bushings go to, and 100k would probably seem time to consider replacement. Steering racks go too, I'm replacing mine with only 37k on the clock, and it has been acting up since 29k when I got the car. Motor mounts can wear. What you really need is a proper pre-purchase inspection, by a qualified Ferrari technician. Giving estimates over the internet is really not the way to do things. An expert needs to see this exact car, to help you. Bottom line, I would not pay more than 29k for a 100k 328. Way too much stuff to potentially have to deal with in the forseeable future. You can buy a car with 35k miles for in the low 40's...so pay now or pay later. I would pay more now and get a documented lower mileage car with good service history. Way lower risk. |

I am considering purchasing an '86 3.2 Mondial with 90k miles. It has a solid, documented service history and ran and shifted nicely when I drove it (but see below re rough idle on restart). I think that with proper maintenance the engine should be good for at least twice that number of miles , but would love to hear other opinions: 1. Does anybody have experience with high miles on the 3.2 or a 3.0 QV engine? 2. At what time should I start worrying about worn valve guides, etc.? 3. Even if the car is as well-maintanined as it appears, I'm guessing that much more mileage will kill most future resale value, especially as the car isn't red. What is the market for solid, documented Ferrairs with over 100k miles on the clock? 4. Also, even if the engine is solid, how about the rest of the car? It drove nicely, but I didn't get to press it too hard. At what point does the chassis/suspension normally need work??? I did notice that the a-arm bushing were showing crazing and cracks on the outside, but otherwise seemed ok. Other worries for those with time to kill: 1. It started from cold quickly with no smoke and then ran well. However, on warm restarts it had some brief stumbles and required cranking for 6-8 seconds before catching, and then ran at a rougher idle until I shut it off and recranked it to a smooth idle. Question: can you intermittently lose ignition on 1 bank, or it that an all or nothing propostion??? Other possible explanations?? 2. It shifted like a champ (it had a transaxle rebuild at 22k under the factory warranty), but I thought I felt the powertrain and shifter moving around a fair bit when shifting harder under power. Question: Are Motor Mounts a wear item on these cars, would they cause this symptom, and are they pricey to replace?? How about shifter bushings, etc? 3. The radiator is original, but was repaired 5 years ago. Question: How much life might be left in this cooling system (i.e.,radiator and hoses - Water pump was redone at 60k 6 years ago)?? How hard/expensive is it to replace radiator and coolant hoses, especially the through the body ones ??? A/c hoses are also original and I assume will slowly leak freon - is it a tough job to replace a/c lines?? 4. Lastly, what do people think this car might be worth??? Sorry for the length - Any and all opinions are encouraged! |
