Jeff.. I would encourage you to call Bob Norwood. I'm sure there are other guys around, but there's not much Bob hasn't done to/with Ferrari engines, including dry-sumping - and his engines don't blow up :-)

My plans are to use an external pump. I'll need to modify the sump somehow. Either welding up some fittings to the sump/trans case and fit pickups through or make a pan extension thick enough for a couple of -12 fittings / pick up tubes.

I have a couple of the books (Metal Fabricators and Crofts book) They explain how a system functions and how to build a tank, They really don't go into detail on how many pick up points and stages are needed for any particular application.

So far I'm going with a 3 stage unit. I've heard that big American V8's & V10's use up to 5 stages to suck oil from every imaginable place it might collect.

I've searched and read up on Pounds pump. I don't like the idea of using the stock pump if I'm going to a true external system.

Jeff
Bill Pound did a dry sump conversion kit. You might ask him for details.

Peter.. I haven't seen those references, but I can tell you one thing. I have a '75 dry-sump plastic 308 that I've tracked and done some pretty silly things with. I've NEVER had a pressure drop.. which is the whole point of dry sumps (unless you want to count esoterics like windage, etc.). I do agree the pump could be better, in THEORY, and Bob Norwood routinely fits 3-stage external pumps. But in practical terms, I haven't had a problem with the stock F system.

PS... I have a complete spare dry-sump engine and tranny, with tank, hoses, etc.. if anyone is interested. P6 cams, Daytona pistons, tricked heads, jetted carbs, etc. 378 on the dyno before I took it apart 10 years ago.

Regards,
Andy

Jeff..If you make this change, please post pics of what you took off and what you added. I am trying to understand the components for a dry-wet sump. I have a '77 Euro.

3-Stage pump minimum - two stages for scavenging (one at either end of the pan), one stage for pressurising. Whatever you, do don't get the stock Euro 308 dry-sump parts. Why? Read the following books:

  • "Race-Car Engineering & Mechanics" by Paul Van Vaulkenburgh. HP Books, 1992.
  • "Metal Fabricators Handbook" by Ron & Sue Fournier. HP Books, 1990.

After reading those, you'll know why the Ferrari system is not the best...

In addition to those, the Guy Croft "Modifying & Tuning Fiat/Lancia Twin-Cams" book also has some good tips on setting-up a dry-sump system...

If you get if figured out, let me know. I was thinking about that for next years mod.....or maybe an F1 gearbox, although that might be a bigger project than my wife...time...I mean time will allow :-)

I'll be dry sumping the 308QV that I'm doing a super charging project on with Mark Eberhardt. I'll be doing a bit more circuit road racing with mine and I've heard that 308's are notorious for wet sumps going dry in the twisties.

so..........I'm going to do the dead and start purchasing hardware. I think a 4 stage pump would be way overkill. for those in the know would a 2 stage suffice or would a 3 stage work better in this application?

Thanks

Jeff Davison
