Disconnect you battery ... otherwise your alternator may get damaged. Also be very careful about fires ... especially if you are welding under the car. Carpets may catch on fire and you don't notice until too late.

Philip,
Make sure that the welding cables are never looped around, or laying alongside, any wiring.
Otherwise, when you strike an arc, the cables will become a transformer primary & couple substantial & potentially damageing energy into that wiring.

If you are just welding on the outside of the body, the welding cables always outside of the body, and the welding ground is clamped quite close to the point that you're welding, then you're quite safe.

If you're doing interior or engine compartment welding, then you'll need to be very careful about the position of the welding cables relative to any nearby wiring. If in doubt, disconnect the wiring at both ends.

It's safe for a cable to cross wiring at ~90° as long as the wire isn't also inside the welding cable loop.

Shouldnt be a problem either way. I never disconnect the battery. Just make sure that your ground is close to whatever your welding. You dont want to ground to the front of the car to do welding on the rear.
