You don't even need to completely remove the water pipe. Just rotate it down until it's out of the way.

Just drain about 1/2 of the coolant out of the system, Remove the upper end of the pipe from the hose section. Loosten the hose clamp on the bottom end of the pipe just enough so that the pipe will rotate, but not enough to loose more than a few drops of coolant.

As you are rotating the pipe, watch the open end to make sure you don't need to drain the coolant down more.

BTW, while you've got the alternator out, weld a couple of pieces of steel rod on the pivot & adjustment bolt heads so that they won't rotate. That gets rid of blindly fumbling up behind the alternator to get a wrench on them. (Search the archives, I've posted photos of the rods I welded onto my alternator. The thread title was under '...cam pulley...' or '...cam drive...' I think.

Yes, I found that removing the water-pipe will give you the necessary room to pull the alternator out.

I need some info about replacing the alternator on the 328.

I have the wheel well off and it looks like you can get to the bolts easily, but it looks like a physical impossibility to remove the alternator from the space available without moving something else. What looks to be the AC compressor hangs down in front of it a bit, an aluminum water pipe runs from the thermostat down close in front of it and then around the motor at the firewall, and the gas tank, squeezes the space immediately in front of the alternator as well. Has anyone done this with the motor and the other stuff still in place?

The water pipe is probably the "easiest" thing I can see to move, followed by the AC compressor, but I don't want to start yanking stuff off in the experimental mode-that gets frustrating and sometimes more expensive than just taking it the pros.

Thanks
