For those who want the ultimate, don't settle for colored blue xenon bulbs that will eventually blow up or melt your wiring harness, these type of bulbs use filaments that will break. Use true HID with a ballast, your Ferrari will perform to modern day standards 300% better! I have the HID kits available and worth every penny. No more dimming headlights and they consume only 35 watts vs. 80-100 watts like filament bulbs which burns hotter. These HID kits will have a true bluish purple color to them like the Audi's and don't need a burn in time like Phillips and are much better in output. The kits I have is not over a $1000 which they retail for, for my Ferrari friends it's $700. |

I agree with David. Go with Hella or Cibie. You will love it.
I had Cibies on my 944T many years ago and I was impressed.

Here is the simple answer. Buy a 7" euro code,(nonsealed beam)replacement lamp. Hella and Cibie are two popular brands. Stick with the standard 55/60w bulb to avoid potential problems with too much amperage draw. These will bolt right in and offer three times the lighting intensity and usefulness of beam pattern. The upgrade will cost you about $75.

What I did was to buy a bulb/headlight from here:

because it was easier to mailorder. I did like these headlights because they had a sharp cutoff vertically and a rise to the right side. Only rarely do people flash me because they think I have my brights on -- especially happens when coming over a rise or when I hit a bump.
I'm not sure what is standard for your car. I used an H4 but I have an '86 Euro and it uses the seperate bulbs. You can convert yours with the above setup. If you use a headlight with an H4 bulb, it should fit on a sealed beam connector(if that's what you have).

Well if you want to spend $1100 get the xenon/hid
or buy what I bought at autobulbdepot for a $150 and you can always upgrade your bulb selection at a later time. |

What you say is true for HID lamps but you can get Xenon gas regular lamps with filaments. A lot of people mistake these for the HID because of the term "Xenon", so places that sell them, sell a lot for that reason. This is probably what you got Mark.

In spite of that, a true xenon filled filament lamp will burn brighter (hotter) and emit more light in the blue spectrum so most people will think they have the expensive ones (HID). Since the HID type can cost thousands of dollars, most people settle for the cheaper version.... |

XENON FACTS
Xenon / HID bulbs do not use a filament like halogen bulb,
but creates light by zapping an arc between two electrodes.
This arc excites gases, igniting metallic salts. The product of
this reaction is intense white light.
Xenon / HID has power consumption of 3.5 amps constant
draw compared to approximately 10 amps drawn from a standard
halogen light bulb.
Xenon / HID bulb life is an average of 3000 hours compared to the
halogen's 750 hour life, and is not effected by vibration.
Xenon / HID Xenon / HID produces a color temperature of 4300
degrees Kelvin verses 2800 degrees Kelvin from a standard halogen
bulb. For comparison, the earth's sun has a color temperature of
5200 degrees Kelvin.
Xenon / HID output is approximately 3200 lumens compared to 750
lumens in a standard halogen bulb, resulting in over three times the
light output.

"Xenon" refers to the inert gas used in the lamp. Using an inert gas like xenon allows a higher filament temperature without depositing the metal back on the inside of the bulb. Because of the higher temperature filament, the light looks whiter(or in somes cases almose blue). A lot of places actually sell xenon bulbs as well as xenon look-a-likes (bluish color light) with blue tinted glass. |

I bought "xenon" low beams for my 540i and 348ts on line from a BMW Club guy, named, I think Jimmy Z??

Now I'm wondering if they're really xenon, as there was no rewiring, just plug'em in. They're a nice crisp bluish color, but really not that bright. I hope they're not taxing my electrical system. The Ferrari especially, I think the BMW can take care of itself.
Anybody know anything about these?? Even if they're not xenon, they work well, and I was planning to do the highs and fogs.

This is the autobulbdepot Item you are looking for, it will replace your sealed beams (that's what was on my 308) with replaceable bulb type lens. Part# IP 9002........ the 60/55 = 110/100 will not overload the wiring on a 308.

but I still don't like such a serious wiring modification -- why not just some nice (no mods) H4 halogen bulb lamps? (I'm fairly sure your 328 headlight fuses could even handle the 80/100 H4 as is -- whereas this gets iffy on the older 308s with 8A high and low beam fuses) |

If you have a sealed beam or an "H" series lamp, you can pick it up at the local auto supply - Pep Boys, Whitlock, Auto Zone, etc.... |
