Ok so this leads me to believe I need a belt adjustment done. Can I have this done by a dealer and not lose an arm and a leg for the 'engine out' work? (as a post says it can be done with the engine still in the car)

Lawrence- sound of warm up idle actually pisses my neighbors off!!

Omar - there have been several posts on the difficulties of getting correct belt tension on 3X8 series cars; remove belt (jack car up and take off wheel and inner fender well and you will have excellent access to all belts). Rotate all pulleys (alt, WP and idler) by hand to feel for tell-tale signs of bearing failure.

JRV is absolutley right about battery cables - doesn't take much corrosion or loose connections to create problems!

ALSO there was a recent post about a ticking noise that was traced to a foreign object being imbedded in a timing belt (NOT good).

Having said that, it took me over a year to get used to the strange noises and smells these car emit, I spent more time checking non-issues than I did driving!

The last thing I'd ever do is start a car, then walk away to let it warm up. You are better off driving it gingerly. At least it has your attention for strange sounds or other abnormaladies.

Road Ferraris are no different than other cars. They do not need to sit there idling before being driven. All it does is impress the neighbors with its sound.

Ticking sounds have been adressed before - often comes from belts loading up with a static charge.

So I have been thinking about my little problem (damn thing is keeping me up!) And I dont think its my alternater or my water pump, but a loose alternater belt (thank God its not the timing belt)

Solution? Tighten the alternater belt up! (I should be able to get at it from under the car, or from top if I take out the air intake box...)

This would make sense as this, with my bad battery should account for most of my problems... I hope.

Thoughts? Is my overall analysis correct?

I checked the battery...the old one was just about dead, so I am definately getting a new battery now.

Any ideas about the tick? Seriously, it sounds like I have a turbo with the spooling sound. (which the tick becomes in the 2-3krpm range.) Is that normal?

I'm with JRV, check the battery cables. Clean them real good, and make sure they tighten down well too....

Sounds like loose belt and very posibly a water pump starting to go bad.

Check your battery cable ends for cleanliness and tightness also, as well as plug & unplug your ground disconect several times to clean it..

Sounds like the Alternator.

Belt to loose to spin or it's gone.

I started my 328 up today, started fine but then when I came back into my garage 10 min later, the car was off.

I try and restart, but I get nothing, I mean I hear a click, and then nothing. I thought it was my battery, so I reconnected my battery charger and tryed a few min later, when she started up after a little hesitation.

I drove her to my mech, then turned her off there. When I restarted her, she started fine (so I thought) until you gave a little gas, then she
SQUEALED! My heart sunk when I heard that (belts?), but...

I turn her off and restart after a few min more on the battery charger ( I have her I would say 1/2 hr on a trikle charger). Now she is fine (more or less) with no squeal. I say more or less as I hear a little tick as she idles.

So she is in for a new battery, as I am sure thats something, but what else?? Thoughts on the tick? It seems more noticablely present 2-3k rpms, but its not like a cam tick.
