Bingo Bill, you were right. Put the gate back on and it shifted perfectly. Thanks to all for the suggestions. |

Jay--I've heard that also--that the aligment will go screwy if you try to shift without the gate installed. Apparently, the shift gate is an important part with these cars and not just there for looks. |

Try simply adjusting the Jam Nut adjustment near where the shifter enters the engine block. 1 degree can make the difference. |

jay I've heard about this issue before on this board, you might search the archives. As I recall, the shift mechanism needs to be carefully aligned on the 2 - 3 gate. If not, you can "lose" 4 - 5. So, yes, it definitely sounds like a linkage alignment issue. Philip |

Another thing I should add (I don't know if it makes a difference) is that the shifter goes into 4th and 5th without depressing the clutch, whereas R, 1, 2, 3, I must depress the clutch. I have had the entire interior out of the car refurbishing it and I am getting ready to put the center console back in and this happens! |

Sometimes the shift forks become loose. It's happened to me twice before in the 10 years I've got the car. The first time, I lost reverse. The next time (years later), I lost first gear. You (or the mechanic) drop the pan, tighten up the screw(s) while making sure the forks are in proper adjustment, put it back together and it will be fine. Not an expensive fix... no parts, just labor. You can even reuse your gear oil, which you'll especially want to do if you've got the high dollar stuff like Redline or Mobil 1.

Probably linkage, but I'm puzzled as to why it would go haywire. I was adjusting the fore-aft motion in my gearshift, and royally screwed up the side-to-side. You could find some gears, but otherwise it was like shifting air. Take your time, study diagrams of how it works, and you (hopefully) can get it back to working. It can get a little confusing, and it's easy to make an adjustment that ends up going the wrong way. (Ask me how I know!) Or else it could be in the tranny. Hope not. |

I have an '81 308. The last time I drove it, (about 3 months ago) everything was fine. Today, I drove across the road to a neighbors house and no 4th or 5th gear. It goes into the slot where it would normally go just fine. It just doesn't seem to "click" into gear.(referring to the sound the tranny makes when shifting into other gears) I release the clutch, nothing happens. It acts like it is nuetral in both gears. Please tell me this is a linkage problem. I really don't know where to start as I am slowly learning my way around cars. Any help anyone could give would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance. |
