Try this trick , take a large screwdriver and put it between the pressureplate and the bellhousing and move the PM1-4 to dead nuts center of the timing mark. Now check your cam marks and they should be right on.I just did my 77 and found that if you crank the engine by hand and get # 1 up in compression you just need to nudge the pressureplate to get it TDC unless someone dialed the cams differently. |

Probably just belt stretch put the new belts on and use the marks. 1/4 would be about 2 degrees, spec is +/-1 degree(at least on my QV), so its really close. If youre nervous you could put a degree wheel on it to be sure, but it sounds fine. |

I have an 80 Gtsi and just started belt replacement. My question is about lining up the "PM 1-4" mark. As the car is now both cams in the rear bank line up perfectly with thier coorisponding indicator marks on the cam journals. However the indicator on the flywheel is pointing right inbetween the scribed "PM" and the first slash mark. From what I can tell there seems to be about a 1/4 inch gap between the "PM" and the first slash mark. I'm guessing that since the pointer is pointing before the first mark it that the timing has been slightly advanced?? The car ran/runs perfectly... I just don't know when the last belt change was so I'm doing it now for peace of mind. Thanks, Scott |
