BTW, It's pretty common for these alternators to suck oil into the back where the brushes contact the rotor's slip rings. Result is the slip rings are ruined. Very few alternator shops are aware that replacement slip rings are available. They'll tell you that the only option is a new rotor. BEEN THERE, DONE THAT: A new rotor for my '82 Euro 308 GTS QV was $200 and took 7 weeks to come from Bosch Germany as there were none in the US. 6-mo. later I found a supplier for the slip rings. They only sell wholesale. I now have a couple of them stashed away just in case.

Any good alternator shop will rebuild (or exchange) your unit for around $80 - $125. Just bring it in but, don't tell them it's off of a Ferrari!!! --- the price will go up! Removing the alt. from your 308 is fairly tedious, but straightforward --- kinda hard to get at. Pull the right hand wheel well and as much of the exhaust shielding as posssible --- the alt. comes out best from the bottom. |

Search the archives for 'alternator' and 'rebuild'. Lots of advice. Upgrade may be possible.

Wow, JRV "is da man" One day later, my one year old battery is completely dead...I mean really dead. Is a rebuild the way to go? I think it's a bosch alt. so it's not a marelli mystery. Any good shops in the central FL area? Can you just buy a rebuilt one on an exchange basis? Any upgrades possible or just get the exact same one? Thanks for the help. Oh yeah, any tips on removal? I mean besides paying Ferrari to do it. |

Bad Diode. and this condition will kill your battery. Time for an Alternator Rebuild. |

Dear Ferraristi, A couple of days ago I noticed that when I turned the engine off and pulled out the key, the Red Generator light would come on and stay on. If I started the car it would go out... pull out the key, again, the light stays on. Any ideas? |
