I had this conversation with Bob Norwood about a year ago. He said the whole Ferrari belt thing is over-rated. In all his years of working on Ferraris (he's been servicing Ferraris in Dallas since I moved here 20+ yrs ago), he claims he's only had 2 cars come in with broken belts. On the other hand, has anybody seen the costs associated with rebuilding a Ferrari engine?!?! Belt replacement is nothing more than an insurance policy. |

I have said it all along that it is an oversold item. There are problems with the plastic cam gears on some 308s cracking and the belt jumping teeth if the engine turns backward, but even the square tooth belts should last that long. Nissan suggests 60,000 miles on the square tooth belts and 105,000 miles on the round tooth belts. You have to use common sense however, because these are only guidelines. Some drivers rev their engines more and use lower gears so they turn more RPMs per mile than some other people. This is exactly the reason I came out with the round tooth pulleys, to extend service intervals and stop the belt jumping, and get rid of the high wear and brittle plastic pulleys for a reasonable cost. |

While my 348 cam belt was replaced at 6,xxx miles/6 years, I noticed in the manual that Ferrari only calls for replacement at 52,500 miles ! Do we really need to spend all that money to replace the belts as such short intervals ? Is the 15,000 mile belt replacement just the financial security plan for dealers ? What do you guys think ? |
