Now that I think about it, doesn't a 308 use a lug BOLT??? (not that I would know these things) http://www.ferrarichat.com/discus/messages/256120/3768.html

Losing the wheel on a Firebird hurts alot less than losing a wheel on a Ferrari. Just ask your insurance agent. I've had aluminum wheels on my Pontiac for 20 years, aluminum wheels on my Corvette for 18 years, aluminum wheels on my truck for 6 years, and aluminum wheels on my car hauling trailer for 7 years. Never had a loose lug nut yet.

I had that happen on a '68 Firbird that I had a long time ago. It had alum. wheels and it started making a big racket, and that's what it was. I've kinda kept an eye on the torque on alum. wheels on my cars ever since. It can happen on any car... Arlie. Not just those "quality built exotic Ferraris" that you appear to express so much disdain for. What is that? My first hunch is jealousy. Correct me if I'm wrong. |

It's bad enough that the timing belts wear out, break apart, and destroy the engine. Now the wheels are falling off. Gotta love those quality built exotic Ferraris.

That happened to a 355 spider on a group drive I was on in Chattanooga TN. He had to borrow my tools to tighten up the four remaining on that wheel. Proper lug bolt torque is 72 ft lbs. |

The other day I heard a faint noise from the right rear wheel. Wasn't sure what it was. This morning on the way to work the battery light in my Saturn went on. Marched back home, checked the voltage, and confirmed it was the alternator. Took it out (real pain in the ass since you have to come in from under the car), and drove to Auto Zone in the only car remaining - the 308. I kept hearing a tick tick tick that coincided with the speed of the wheel. This time, however, it was much louder. When I got to the store I noticed one lug nut gone and the 4 others loose. No telling how much further I could have gone without losing the wheel. Fortunately I only have to replace one lug nut. |
