We had this happen a number of times when the cars were new. The only way we could get the system to bleed properly (on a few of the 550's)was to jack the front of the car up, pull the rad. cap off when the engine was still quite warm, and let the car sit overnight that way. No matter how we bled the cooling system when it was hot, doing this would result in the system taking another gallon in the morning. That amount is far more than just thermo expansion would account for. We concluded that the problem is in the left head that traps a small air bubble. It dosnt happen all the time, but when it does, this is the only way we found to get the air out of some of these 550's. The 550's with this problem would show it on the temp gauge, and it was always after cooling system work was done. Stop by Home Depot and get some of the 1x1 foam striping, and finish what Ferrari started, in sealing around the radiator. When the ambiant temp climbs over 100 (or on the track), the extra work done in this area can be seen on both the coolant, and the oil temp gauges, and the amount of time the fans stay on. |

James: Thanks. I will go ahead and do the re-bleed. Your scenario seems to fit this situation as I didn't notice it doing this for the first couple of weeks of ownership. |

Mark, I should have been more specific: I saw 250 on the OIL TEMP gauge, not the water temp. The water temp never got past the middle of its range--straight up vertical. Not sure what temp that is offhand... |

Mark I'm sure they did but as most fill with hose water instead of distilled water which has less encapsulated air, higher specific heat, ( the ability to absorve heat) and causes less corrosion, after a few days entrapped air often comes out an a rebleed is a good idea. |

Dave: Thanks! I was wondering about that as I had to believe the dealer had in fact bled the cooling system when they performed the service. I was just not used to seeing those types of temps as my 512M never ran that high. That is reassuring. Regards, Mark |

No worries. I routinely saw 250 this past weekend on track in 103egree weather. It dropped very quickly during my cool down lap. As long as it doesn't get very close to the Red Zone, you are in the normal range. 550's run hot at lower speeds, or with lots of speed-up/slow down driving anyway. Extended airflow, regardless of external temp, fixes that right up! |

The only thing I'd check is that cooling system is properely bled. |

I recently purchased a 99 550. The other day I was running it fairly hard for a few brief blasts near my home in 94 degree weather. While the water temp never reached the red zone and the oil temp never elevated the water temp did reach approx 230-240 after I slowed down on the way home. It would quickly fall again to say 180-200 as the car would gather speed again with more air flow. Is this anything to be concerned about or would these temps seem appropriate given the ambient temp at the time? Thanks! P.S....the car recently had the coolant replaced at the dealer. |
