Hi Ming, and Ernie , The dealer has been very good, and they have a slightly simpler explanation. They reckon that it could be just due to mere lack of lubrication, for it is easy for rust to build up around the joints of the levers that move the headlights up and down. A few drops of oil and they say that might do the trick, but I shall have to watch and see how it goes. In the meantime, it is perhaps time for me to bid a very fond farewell to another few hundred bucks, in valet service and all, for taking the car to the dealer and back, and etc. |

Hi Kenneth, Sorry to hear about the same old problem happened again. I agreed with Ernie that there must be some shorts with the wires. Do you still have warranty from IM? Best, Ming PS:I had my battery replaced last month(another common problem of the 456) |

I just thought of another thing that it could be. Sometimes the control switch inside the car goes bad. I could be a pinched wire that causes the lights to loose thier minds. But if you have replaced the motors already I don't think that is the problem. It really sound like you have a short somewere in the wiring. You should have that check first. |

Ernie, Thanks for the information. You are being extremely helpful, although I am not sure if my problem could be due to the same identical cause, because in my case, both headlamps had taken their turns to go wrong in the past. I shall ask the dealer if the headlight motor needs to be replaced again, and see how it goes. But popping up headlamps should be rather common amongst Ferrari cars, and I am interested to know if they are generally reliable or not. As for the 456 itself, it is a truly magnificant car. It has just the right combinations for me. The V-12 of course is sheer magic. It has a completely different kind of appeal. It does not force its ways upon people with aggressive gestures, but rather, it moves and persuades people with its gentle ways. So if you crave for a Ferrari for your inner divine satisfaction and not for its external stunning effects, the 456 / 575 is the car for you. In particular, if you have a passion for a Ferrari, but you also need a 4-seater, then there is probably no equal for a 456. Best wishes. |

Kenneth I have a 348 and had a problem with the right side head lamp not popping up. It turned out to be a broken spot weld on the back of the headlight housing, that was causing the failure. When the light would start to raise it would get hung up under the front lip and bog the motor down, resulting in the fuse blowing. It could be one possibility. Also you could have some bad relay switches. I would check there first if the problem comes back. By the way I think the 456 is a very nice car. When I get another Ferrari I would like to get one. How do you like yours, and are there any other issues with it? |

Last week, the righthand side headlamp on my 456 failed to pop up. When I got home, and switched off the lights, the properly functioning left headlamp went down, but the malfunctioning right headlamp then came up. Thereafter the 2 headlamps went up and down in alternative turns, but not at the same time. After a number of days, somehow the movements of the 2 headlamps synchronized and everything appeared to be back to normal. Except for the bad feeling that is left in me in that I would never know when it will next malfunction again. The car has had both headlamp motors replaced, one after the other, since new. Just about 6 months ago, I had replaced yet another headlamp motor in the 456 when the thing did not pop up. Anybody with similar experiences? Is there a design fault, or is it just the way it goes?
