Great job Randle, just the kind of posts that I like to see.

Quasi-legal disclaimer: I am fairly sure the 246 and 308 racks are the same.

The right end (from the drivers view) is where this bushing and most of the play is found. The picture shows the metal housing that contained the original bushing material. There is also a metal washer behind the housing that goes in first. I heated the steering rack a little with a heat gun where the bushing is so it would come out easier. The replacement bushing (DiFatta Bros. $1.45 each) is a near perfect fit for the original bushing housing. I trimmed the little ridges and tabs with a utility knife and then sanded for a finger-push fit. Position the flat spot on the plastic bushing under the retaining screw hole (shown) and replace by reseating with a long socket on an extension (home made drift) using gentle tapping action. Replace small retaining screw (if the holes don't line up, drill a new one). Four or five hours of work on the bench for the full overhaul and $1.45 plus steering rack oil--not bad!

Sorry, did I miss the first part of this thread. Why were you doing this?

I've got some play in the right hand end of my 308 steering rack. It's not bad, but it would better without it.

It would be great to be able to strip and rebuild it. Is what you show something that would help?

I thought I should send some shots of my steering rack fix before I put it back together. I popped the rack bushing out with a slide hammer. The original bushing material seems like caked grease or wax. Scrape it out, cut down the ridges on the 4330731 Fiat rack bushing and replace making sure to line up with the original retaining screw hole or redrill a new one. The bushing is captive in the old bushing housing and a perfect fit on the rack and will last 10 times longer!Upload
