Someone put forth, in a previous thread, the rather bright idea of using WD40 as the degreaser, followed by low concentration soap and warm water. Apparently results in a bright sheen to metal parts and worked quite well. Safe on the engine.

I use Simple Green as my usual degreaser. Just have to be careful to keep it off the airbox silkscreen (you can guess why I know that).

Its your own car do whatever you like with it
but I have a receipt from a PO of my 328 for $5000.00 in eng out repairs due to using Gunk on the engine

Gunk ate the diff seals and caused the trans diff carrier berings to rust out and the seals and berings on the front cover gears

Any time in the records where is states the engine was cleaned it also specifies cleaning it dry, this is from one of the most reputable repair shops on the West Coast

Ferrari is not like a regular car in its design so you need to be more careful or pay the price

A couple cans of spray engine degreaser and a garden hose on a warm to the touch engine (not hot!) works surprisingly well. I'm not a big fan of stream or pressure washing any engine, the water just ends up in the most anoying places, paint get discolored or is knocked off, plating is degraded, stuff you never thought of rusts and sticks.......

Guys, guys, guys...... Such old ladies. Chris, just take the same precautions you would with any other car. After you've steamed it, just remember to lube/oil all the moving bits and pieces.

I would never spray water on a hot or running engine, its a good way to crack a head

Search the archives, there was a VERY long thread on this subject last fall. Lots of things to be careful of. STRONGLY recommend you read it.

Thank you for all that responded!
How about with just warm water and soap from a garden hose, carfully done???????? There's got to be a way to wash your engine......

Taking the advice of Ron Tonkin, I power washed my 308 carb engine while it was running at a drive in wash place. Make sure the plug doughnuts are good and close the little holes in the distr caps with tape (my 78 308 doesn't have the rubber distributor boots). It looked great and suffered no after effects.

Be very careful.

I've heard nightmare stories from friends of my dad's who have done this.

I think be careful with the hoses and seals and stuff. They dry out afterwards and crack?

Cheers

Hello Ferrari gurus!
Can anyone give me some advice on steam cleaning the engine bay of a 79 308GTB? Except for the obvious i.e. dist. system and electrical, is there anything I should be particularly aware of? Your mentions would be most appreciated!
Thanks,Chris.
