Well I got it but can't figure out how I got here. I did a belt change and valve adjustment. When I changed the belts I left the 2 distributors in place as a shortcut. Put the belts on and hand cranked the engine maybe 20 times to make sure I was dead on and everything was a go.So I put the cam covers on and went to start the car up. No interference but it would not start. I put the timing light on and was way out ??? Now a little note here my bank 1-4 dist is set up with 2 Pertronix's breakerless ign. so all of my timing is done with 1 dist. So for the hell of it I decided maybe I was 180 out so I reset this dist. Dumb mistake here because the backfire was from bank 5-8 and until I thought about it I should have rotated that dist. also. Case closed here was the problem so I just did a 180 on the 5-8 dist and it purrs with the exception of the carbs that I now need to go and reset. What I can't figure out is how did I get 180 out when I didn't remove the distributors. |

One more idea, check for vacuum leaks in the lines to the rear bank of carbs. There are some hoses that can come off or get eaten by rodents. |

Steve I use a direct coil set up which uses a relay to power up the coils (means the coils are drawing battery power when the car is sitting). Anyway, had similar symptoms once. Relay power was not well enough connected (had worked lose). My advice -- check all your connections and grounds. Philip |

I'm heading down the timing road. I think I may have a problem with my 5-8 bank timing or dist. I'm going to a grad. party today so I will not be able to work on it today. I'll keep you posted. By the way cold compression on all cyl. is 160psi +/- 5 psi and all wires/extenders check out OK. Plugs are new and no points. All valves within spec. |

Sticking intake valve? Try dumping a can of degunker in the oil.. running it a few hours.. then changing the oil and filter. |

In that case check for a bad spark, eg bad plug wire, torn boot, cracked plug extender, bad plug, bad points...... If spark and timing OK, it must be the carbs. |

Timing is on. The backfire is not all the time it seems like the cyclinder loads up and then bang. Only does this on the front bank (cockpit side)and intermittent. I stopped for the day , tomorrow I need to start putting the timing covers and the AC unit back on so I have some work to do. The tank is low on fuel and I had run dry but I just changed the fuel filter and the fuel lines. |

Try fresh fuel before you try anything else. One of your carbs is probably lean, and with stale fuel that causes misfires. That means your fuel/air charge is being pumped into the exhaust system, where the next cylinder is igniting it. Good idea to make sure fuel is fresh before setting up carbs. I bet half the Ferraris out there are running on stale fuel. |

Back firing like that means your timing is way off. Double check your timing marks allignment again. |

OK here I am with new belts and tensioners and WP. Went to start it today (been down for 3 months) and it runs but the rear carbs ar popping and then BANG (with flames) all at idle 1000rpm. Intermittent like 1 cyl is loading up with fuel then bang it ignites.Ran good before taking it down (WP went)only had a little pop when cold but good when it warmed up. Have been playing with the carbs and maybe something is screwed up. Timing is on at 7BTDC and also have breakerless ign. Any pointers please? |
