The interesting statement here is the squeal you heard. I would watch this because if it isn't a loose belt you are going to see the water pump take a dive in a month or so. I've had very few clamps loosen up enough to leak after they have set with the hose as it gets old. If the hoses and clamps are new then they'll need a follow up adjustment. |

Thanks- folks. No leaks yet- but i'm about to take her for a leak test drive for both coolant and oil- I'll finish the oil change if I can figure out the torque setting for the drain plug. I posted another thread for this question about torques. |

John--I'm not sure if you're aware, but an excellent Ferrari mechanic is located in your general area , I think between Boston and the Cape. His name is John Turrell of Independent Ferrari Service. Although I haven't used him to date, I've heard a number of good things about his expertise. If you don't have his number, I'll try to locate it for you for future reference. |

John--I bet that first drive felt good! Your assumption is correct--the clamps can loosen over time due to expansion/ contracton / drying -up of the rubber hoses. When I got my car last July, I was amazed at how loose some clamps were. Also be careful about overtightening . With an old hose, the clamp can cut through and cause a leak. One hose which I did that to was the heater hose, where it's attached to the engine block just to the left and below the rear distributer. Due to the intense heat at the junction, the hose tends to deteriorate faster and if overtightened , the clamp can cut through easily. |

Yep, hoses can loosen. This can also happen with old hoses that harden. Mine hardened so I replaced them all at the engine. |

Not uncommon, especially if the hoses were recently changed, and not tightened completely, or loosened some after a time. I had hoses start leaking a month or so after having all of them changed on a previous 308 and my current 328. Big hassle, but I did the same as you and just went through and tightened all of them and no more leaks. Make sure you don't over fill the coolant expansion tank in the engine compartment too. It should be 6cm below the filler neck. Any higher and the excess will boil out.... |

I'm hoping someone has some insight on this: I just bought my 308, and drove it home in and out of traffic for two hours. This may have been the first fairly long trip the car has had in a while. No overheating issues at all. Parked it and didn't drive the next day which was yesterday (rain). Today- I pull the car out to change the oil. Two coolant puddles! Yikes! The front one was a little behind the spare tire area and about 16" in diameter (maybe a few ounces of fluid) and the other leak was under the right side of the motor and a very small puddle (6" diam). I first pulled off the air box and jacked up the rear. There was fresh coolant dripping off of a couple of the sump pan bolts. I could see from underneath that there was also a fresh drop on the big rubber hose coming off the thermostat housing. The clamp was not tight so I put a couple turns on it to snug it up. The waterpump looked dry. When I started the car today- before moving it and finding the puddles, there was a little belt chirping that went away after a few seconds (maybe coolant on the alt belt or something?). So, I moved onto the front leak. The radiator looked dry as did the hoses coming off of it so I removed the spare and fiberglass panel/battery cover etc. and looked around. There was a little fresh coolant under the fat pipes below and behind the battery. So, I tightened those clamps (a couple turns also)and put everything back together. Fired her up and idled until the fans came on- looking for any leaks. Nothing. Test drive for maybe ten minutes and parked in the drive for ten minutes. Moved to the garage and still no puddles. Could it be that the hoses loosened because the car had not been on a long drive in a while. Again, the car is new to me. I know it can't be this easy. I'm sorry this post is so long but I wanted to describe the entire problem. |
