I'm glad you found the problem, there's nothing worse than a stiffy when you're trying to drive down the road.

Somebody had to say it....Norm

L.C. Glad you found it. That could be the cause of a lot of high idle problems. Good tip.

Thanks guys for your instructions! PROBLEM SOLVED!!!

I just came back from 2 hour cruise, it was just sooooo relaxing to have the car behaving like it should do. I could even see some pretty women watching me - they must of liked the smooth action as well :-)

I used WD-40 for the cables and for everything else some anti-seize lube. Then I found the actual fault - did you know how much dirt you gas pedal can collect (because its partly under the floor line)?? I found a piece of leather which was in position where it sometimes could affect the pedal movement! Like some of you know, my car nowdays has a new interior, so the interior man must of left that little 3 inch x 1 inch piece "sailing" in my car.

Anyway, was good to have the cables etc. lubricated, now I can be sure everything will work correctly in the future as well.

Was good to receive a great back-up from F.C.! Thanks again!

Regards, LC

LC,
I had the exact problem you're refering to with my 365BB...Very heavy throtle response effort required...then bang, she's off like a rocket. I found, after lifting the car on a lift, that there is a removeable alu panel under the gas pedal area. Once removed, you'll find a bell crank assembly where the throttle cable attaches. Remove the bell crank assembly..Clean and lube. Clean the chassis pivot point, as well. Although my throttle is still heavy (4-3 barrels to open)...She's very, very smooth again. If you need a parts diagram, contact me via e-mail....and I'll send one to you.

I did it and broke the cable retainer. I bend it back right though with a lot of time to line up the threads and it works great again.

Bret, I did that and for 2 mos. I couldn't figure out why my idle wouldn't return to idle speed.

Note how Magoo says not to tighten it too much when reassembling...I wonder how I know.

L.C. as Ed says use a anti-seize lube. One of the areas also to check is where your linkage joins the cable. If your TR has a ball type of connection where the cable joins, the ball can bind and cause the butterfly not to close all the way. Lube it with anti-seize lube and be sure when you put it back together you don't tighten up on the ball too much.

I have seen throttles that worked just fine with the engine off but were hard as hell to depress with the engine running. Why? Because the engine vacuum on the butterfly caused excess friction on the throttle shaft. Cure? Clean everything up and lubricate with an anti sieze compound which contains graphite.

There definitely seems to be something wrong here. I have seen the TR cable (sent me the wrong one once instead of a 308 cable and it was very free moving, etc. I would think it would be routed similar to the 308, comes out the middle of the fiberglass bottom of the cockpit and makes its way back to the firewall, where it comes up through it and out to the top of the engine. That is how it is in the 308. Start checking it out. The throttle feel should have nothing to do with anything other than the throttle cable and springs. Nothing else can really affect it.

To describe more the feeling I have when pressing the pedal when engine is running - its like my car would have 6 two barrel Webers (they would need a hefty press), just like putting weight against large springs or something. Believe me, I have driven lots of different performance cars and the feeling isnt near anywhere the same. It seems the problem is getting worse every week.

Arnaldo, thanks for your advice. Unfortunately I havent got the parts manual, so I must use my imagination :-) I moved the accelerator pedal underneath the airbox and it moved smoothly (just like the gas pedal does when I use my hand to press it). Damn, could be something related to the ignition system... I have hesitation between 2700-2800 rpm but have thought this was normal. Is this normal when you compare this to the other cars you have driven?

Thanks, LC

L.C., one more thing. I am not sure about this since I've never done it, but from what I remember from the P.M., I don't think you will need a lift to deal with this issue. A jack and stands should be sufficient, if at all required.

L.C., there is definitely something wrong with the car. I own a TR and I have driven several other TRs as well, and I am yet to see any with that issue. The Parts Manual clearly illustrates the path for the accelerator cable. But as a quick test (BE VERY CAREFUL IF ENGINE IS HOT!!!), you could move with your hand the accelerator level underneath the airbox to see how smoothly it feels there. You might have to disengage the cable to be sure, but it is a good place to start testing.

Well I just checked the cable in garage... Firstly - if there is a cable it must run under the car. I can see the cable coming to the engine compartment. Im not sure if its all cable to the engine, or something else - but anyway I think I have to call my local dealer because I havent got a car lift in my garage. Actually theres a hydraulic-like feeling in the gas pedal when Im pushing it, nothing seems to be wrong - is it my shoes or is the engine out of tune (something wrong with the electrics?)?

I've never had this problem with my '92 512TR, it's very smooth and easy to control the amount of throttle as needed. However, I've had a similar problem to what you've described in several other, older, Ferraris as the conection has to go through a lot of twists and turns to get to the back of the car.

Check all the connnections, rollers and whatever, and apply a good dose of lubricant....Norm

I've only driven one TR and the thing was smooth as glass. The clutch was a lot easier than the 308 (hydraulic vs mechanical). The gas was about the same. It's a much beefier setup than the 308, so a touch heavier but just as smooth.

Well, I think I have to fix that problem today, if yours works then why shouldnt mine work. I will get first driving impression after I have fixed it. Best option would be to take the whole wire out of the car, but that's propably a huge task - so Ill try giving little WD40 at a time and move the pedal at the same. Hope fully it works :-)

Thanks!

i have a 88 tr and my accelerator doesnt really stick, but had to switch to driving shoes as my problem was the closeness between all 3 pedals, maybe a little wd -40 might help, wd-40 is good for anything..my 2 cents..

Im used to driving cars with manual transmission, so it feels bit embarressing when driving in city I press the gas pedal very gently and nothing happens - then I press slightly more and "kick!" Im driving immediately 30mph! This same happens in every gear if I`m not ultra careful. I know the gas pedal is stiffer than in normal car (because of the flat 12), but can you really say (honestly) that your gas pedal works very, very smoothly from take off?

Just wanted to know if theres something wrong with my car (need WD40 etc.), or is this common with other TRs as well. For this reason it hasnt been too fun driving in the city - driving takes too much concentration and I havent got time to see the chicks :-)
