I just order new seals from Sodacom's. Not sure which one he gave me?

You crack me up. I had the good fortune of doing this while the engine is upside down so nothing flew out loose.

Did you get the viton seals? or the regular oring seals? I had the regular o-ring seals and they immediately leak. Now I have to go through this mess again.

Bill -- On the Owner's Site click on "spare parts" and then "go" which will get you to the FerrariUK site. Once there, click on "browse catalog", then select the "Mondial" family and "'85-'89 Mondial 3.2". Select the "gearbox/diff" box and you'll get a list of the various TAVs (pages).

OK found the other two balls in the gear oil by changing containers of the gear oil. I think I have all of the parts now. 3 balls, 3 springs, and 1 spacer (what I previously thought you were calling a sping cap). I'm still not sure what a "spring cap" is but I think there is sufficient pressure on the spings with out the "caps".

I went on the owners site but I'm not sure where to find anything like TAV032. I did a search on "TAV032" and nothing was found. Where is this on the owners site?

got it out (Break cleaner)... it looks like I am missing two balls and spring caps on the two rear most holes. I am certain they were not there when I pulled the pan. What do these do? I guess I'll just put it back together without them or see if I can get two overnight?

OK I have found now the three springs one ball and one spring cap. I put the ball and cap back into the hole since that was how it was when I took it apart. Now that I know how it goes back I can not get the cap out...

Thanks, and I'll keep messing with it. Any good idea's on how to get the balls out if they are there?

Bill -- On the LH edge of the gearbox pan you'll see a widened area maybe 1" wide by 3" long with 1 blind counterbore hole. If you look at the corresponding place on the gearbox housing above that there are three holes up into the housing that intersect the moving rods:

The forwardmost hole (from top-to-bottom) should have a ball (that contacts the rod), a coil spring, a spring cup, and a spacer (that rests against the gearbox pan flange surface).

The middle hole should have a ball (that contacts its rod), a coil spring, and a spring cup (that rests against the gearbox pan flange surface).

The rearmost hole should have a ball (that contacts its rod), a coil spring, and a spring cup (that fits down in that blind counterbore in the gearbox pan).

See TAV032 (inside gearbox controls) in the Mondial 3.2 SPC on the Owner's Site for the balls/springs/cups/spacer.

It is a confusing looking arrangement, but the swaged metal washer approach is just an overall lower cost way to form a permanent groove (i.e., easier to machine 2-step counterbored thru holes and swage in the washers rather than machine grooves in the thru holes). This is a good example of why people (sometimes rightfully IMO) b*tch about the lack of detail in the WSMs.

Steve...

I think I said it once before "you da' man"!!!
That makes sense!!!

I just came in the from the garge to check F-chat and post that the front seal had the same kind of washer? I put quite a bit of pressure on the front swaged washer and it did not move so I was stumpped. Glad you made this post when you did or I may have removed the washer... Sometimes I don't think as well as I should with gear oil in my hair :-)

Bill -- Do not remove the swaged "metal" washer (but to be where you are and not replace the inner shaft seal would be a sin IMO) -- with a curved dental pick (or toothpick or something else sharp) you want to pull/fish the seal/o-ring out of that groove. By "deforming" the new seal/o-ring you should be able to easily reinstall it into the groove.

OK put the car in Neutral and it looks like every thing would stay in place. Loosened the bolt and shift rod would not come out. Took the bolt all the way out and the shift rod came out. Took some playing to acually get the rod out of the car once it was out of the engine.

Looks clear to replace the front seal. The rear seal is a different story. There is a metal washer holding it in place. Then the crank case has been hammered and bent to hold this metal washer in place. Looks like it has be ground down removed, seal replaced, retainer put back in place, then crankcase has to be bent to hold the retainer in place. If this is accurate then I'm only going to replace the front seals.

Will there be pressure on this? I dont want to loosen this nut to have everything snap to a new position so I don't know how to put it back to where it should be?

I found a loose spring in the gear box pan??? uh-oh... There is a spring just like it in the edge of the pan. Where does this second spring go?

I have the transmission pan off now... Looks like if I loosen the bolt that has the shift linkage clamped to the shift rod the whole shift rod will slide out through the seals... I guess that's what I have to do???

Bill,

Thinking back to Sept, I am fairly certain that the shifter had to be adjusted after changing the seal out.

been through arichives can't find technical description of how to replace these. I just pulled the oil pan but it is not obvious yet how to replace them. I am going to go ahead and remove the gear case bottom cover to see if it becomes obvious then how to replace them. I am concerned I might get the shifter out of adjustment if I take things apart too far? Am I on the right track?

Thanks,
Bill
