Since I'm off work tomorrow I'll be continuing my trouble shooting. Let's hope for the sake of my wallet this is the elusive problem. I have been able to piece together the cap with a little epoxy and HV insulating paint. If I install it and everything is ok then I'll be a very happy camper. And ready for a new cap!! |

Mitchell, ever hear of Veblen goods? They are items that don't obey the normal laws of economics. The more expensive they are, the more people want them. It's a vanity thing. That's why the cars are priced so high when new, and also why the price of Ferrari parts can stay up there. We like telling our friends at cocktail parties how much we just spent on a waterpump or clutch; spice that up with some scare tactics (oh, you'll surely seize your engine if you don't fit factory plug wires....) in the few cases where there is an alternative. So combine the fact that most owners are reluctant to choose a non-OEM part with the relatively small market for parts (there are only so many vain car nuts out there who have the means to get into the club, and we daren't drive our cars in case they wear out), and that leads to a situation where nobody is really interested in making parts for F cars and so the vast majority of parts are ONLY available from Ferrari, at whatever price they deign to sell them. Seriously, the reason old production Ferraris are so cheap (good news if you are planning to buy one, in the short term at least) is that they are a financial liability. Every time some little thing goes wrong, it's $1000. However, this is very bad news once you own one, and also if you want to sell one. Shees, some mass produced American muscle cars sell for more than a decent 308 of the same vintage. It's a shame really, takes a lot of the joy of owning these pleasure machines away. In other words, Ferrari's balance sheet is nice and fat while yours is nice and thin, and not likely to get any fatter when you sell your car. If the parts were cheaper, Ferrari wouldn't be able to spend the money they do on F1 while your production car would have better resale value. The only sensible way to deal with this is to find and use the generic parts when you can, to even out the times when you can't. In fact, many are technically superior to OEM parts (brakes, electronic ignition, performance clutches, wheels and tires, exhausts etc.). And to drive the cars sympathetically and service them thoroughly and regularly. That way, things won't break as often. |

I'm sure I'll be sticking with factory parts for my "red bundle of tube frame fun". They were good enough for Enzo... I'm possitive I would be very uncomfortable paying a tenth what you paid for bed sheets. I am 100% comfortable with what Ferrari parts cost. You can sleep anywhere... |

I ditto what Davidhanda says, I've dealt with both also, and it's a toss up on price, quality, and speed of delivery. Only diff. I can see is buying from an American supplier vs. U.K. |

I finally think I found the source of that nasty bank 1-4 miss/drop out. I took 2 screws out of the dist. cap and it fell into 3 pieces. Guess it won't work well anymore! I saw some imformation on bad caps. Does anyone know a source of reliable caps? I'd certainly prefer not to pay the $480 factory price but I don't want to buy junk! I think I'll go ahead and put new wires on, also. Ditto on their availability/quality, also. Thanks in advance.. |
