$52K for a tranny is the only excuse I'd need to walk away!

I have owned a 95 for several years and do my own repair / maintainance
1) Radiator can be fixed at a competent radiator shop
2) Also check Power steering pump for leaks
3)Valve adjustment will be due at 45K - it's expensive to do at the dealer
4)might be worthwhile to push the diagnostic button on the FI computers and check for any stored codes

Great car - but parts are expensive

Just for comparison's sake - what is the cost for a headlight motor in the US?

Windows not sealing(regulator problems)
Pop up head light problems(winking, not working at all etc.)
Leaking shocks(usually the right rear)
Various rattles in the interior
rads leaking on the top left corner at the tank welds
Very expensive to fix anything
2 oil filters per oil change and 12 liters of expensive oil.
Front brake pads are almost $1000(yes just the pads)
Nice car though

James: I thought that this gearbox is still currently being sold. i.e. in the new 456.

The 400/412 had a GM TH400. Easy to get parts for those!

I think the problem is that parts no longer exist.
Others?

James,

Its hard to get independent mechanics who are so skilled and willing to rebuilt a Ferrari transmission. At least official Ferrari dealers plainly refused to rebuilt my transmission. I think that is a pretty sad fact. They obviously want to sell you the complete unit to merely replace.
One thing I learned from that: Official dealers earn money with original spare parts! They are not keen on actually repairing things because they dont seem to earn enough money with working hours. On the other hand they often lack the skill and knowledge to do such difficult work because they havent done this anymore for a long time.
End of story: I found a very skilled independent mechanic who replaced all destroyed parts as well as those which can only be used one time (Cant be used anymore when built out once!). Repair was intense because the two main wheels of the trans where already broke. Costs were around 3500 compared to 11500 plus another 1500 for built in and built out.
Consequence: I dont service my Ferrari at my official dealer anymore!
BTW: The indepent mechanic even gave me one year guaranty on the rebuilt transmission because he only used original F spare parts.
Ferrari Germany wanted to give me one year warranty for the brand new 13000 transmission repair, too!
Go figure!!!!

Con saluti cordialissimi,
Jens Haller

P.S. I dont doubt that a 456 transmission costs over 50000$. The price just horrifies me...

I got that price from an article in "Sports Car Market" by Mike Sheean. It seemed high to me but he is a reliable source. I don't know if they can be rebuilt. Anyone?

James,

If that price is right I can only say its insane! There is absolutely no value that can justify such a price!
The transmission for my 348 should cost 11000.
Even this is FAR too much considering that Porsche transmissions who take much more abuse and handle as much torque last nearly a whole "normal" car life. Additionally the costs for Porsche trans are only a fraction of those fragile Ferrari ones!
