Hans, the exhaust manifold heat shields are loose, esp. the front one, mine's a US '78 car. I can't see any fasteners, so it looks like these are the weld-on type as Gerrit says. Awfully thin material to be welding on! So in which case I am going to find a way to stuff something that doesn't burn in between.

Must say that the noise they make when I move them manually is more thunky than the tin rattle I am hearing when I drive. So I may have two rattlers back there.

The flat pan that holds that white wool above the muffler in place is also loose, with no apparent fasteners. I think the muffler has to come out to fix that. But it doesn't appear to rattle and it isn't going anywhere. So I don't think it is the noise-maker.

Russ, depends on what kind you have. If Euro, they are attached with 6mm bolts. And yes they can be dealt with without taking the engine out. If US spec, then the shields are welded around the headers, in which case the headers have to come out. Front one requires removing the RH fuel tank. With experience a 1.5 hour job.
There are other shields on both US and Euro that are easier to get at. Take a look at a parts manual (can always check these out at Ferrari of UK parts site).

Russ - I'm LMAO over your comments. I'm not sure what is making the noise, etc. Could you be a little more specific? Is it muffler, or ?????

Barring that, perhaps I can take a listen as you drive it. I'm not that far away. Glad to help. Maybe we can do a drive by, or a ride-in, or ???? I find these old car intriguing, and would love to be of assistance.

Perhaps the neighbor kids put rocks in your hubcaps.

Sounds like I am dragging a tin can full of pebbles...how are these supposed to be secured to the exhaust, and can they be fixed without taking the engine out.

Now that I have conquered the ignition system, oil leak, the carbs, and the electrical gremlins, I am down to the aesthetic stuff.
