If they are stuck, that's good news! They are fixed via a splined shaft to the camshaft...any motion would be problematic. Don't break them...they cost a bundle! (But you can use Fiat parts if yours are the white plastic ones with the spring/clip inside, those are only $5 and change from intl auto). The caps are a killer though...(and now you know why GT4's are such a bargain...) |

Centrifugal force acting on the springs take care of the advance. You can't twist it with your fingers like that at low speed. |

I believe that the 308 US points-type distributor rotor is rigidly attached (via the distributor shaft) to the camshaft and that only the lobed cam actuating the points is moved relative to the camshaft by the advance mechanism (so this is why rotor phasing to the cap gets critical). Peter R. posted some photos of the internal bits here: http://www.ferrarichat.com/discus/messages/256120/210875.html showing the slots in the lobed cam piece that are part of the advance stuff. |

Having recently celebrated the arrival of my "bargain" GT4 with a bottle of $3.99 Pinot Grigio, I am starting to have some very basic questions: The question for today is about the mechanical advance, which I believe has frozen from sitting. By grabbing the distributor rotor and twisting it to and fro, shouldn't I be able to feel the mechanical advance springs? Right now, I don't think I could twist the rotor even with pliers. Both distributor advance mechanisms feel absolutely stuck. Shouldn't they feel more like every other mechanical advance distributor I have experienced? Thanks, Jay Morris |
