Dennis that black 355 used to belong to my younger brother when he was going to school here in the U.S.

Back in 1998, I stopped by Ferrari of San Francisco while in town for bidness. They had a used 355, black/tan, for sale. 75,000 miles on the clock. Car looked nearly new. Salesman told me that the seller used the car as his daily driver, commuting everyday.

vty,

I bet the 355 that Ferrari had driven around the world would be the highest mileage 355 in the world.

In fact, a current eBay ad has a 355 with 51826 miles - the highest I have seen on an advertised 355. I like the "New Condition" description.

My nephew bought a new '97 f355 to replace his unreliable Porsche - counter to the stereotype. The f355 was basically trouble-free until his mileage got up into the 40K range. Then he started having enough problems that he decided to sell it. That was with normal servicing and the 30K major done.

"At approx "X" miles the miles and cost associated w/ 355 are upside down"

The absolute lowest cost structure you can get with an F355 is gas+tires+15K+30K+insurance. Say you won such a car for 60K miles

Best Case:
gas..: $5000
Tires: $6000
15K..: $3000
30K..:$10000
......------
......$24000
or $0.40/mile

More expensive case:
gas...: $10000
clutch: $4000 (2)
exhaust: $6000 (tubi)
header.: $5000
Brakes.: $3000
tires.: $12000
15K....: $3000
30K....:$14000
........------
........$57000
or $0.95/mile

Thats the cost structure these cars are designed into--you are ALWAYS upside down!

"is there a point at which it becomes counter investment"

The instant you buy it! It was never an investment, and with as many F355s as Ferrari made, it never will be. Its a car, a car that is fun to drive. Buy it to drive it. Don't buy it to sit in a garage.

I actually agree ....let me be more specific.
At approx "X" miles the miles and cost associated w/ 355 are upside down.

I am fully aware of a vehicle usually is the worst investment out there.

I was speaking of the "services investment" vs's dump the car.

depreciating luxury items are never investments, never.

An investment, at least my definition is something that increases in value over time above the rate of inflation. One of my pet peeves are sellers stating "I've invested this into..." They've actually "spent"

that said, my '97 355 has 21,000 miles.

and when the cost of repairs / maintenance becomes more than the value of the car, thats when it either becomes a labor of love and a "keeper" or time to sell it off and be happy with the years of enjoyment you've gotten out of it (but not neccesarily the dollar return).

Just don't buy someone elses "counter investment"

Just wondering what people have seen
and is there a point at which it becomes
counter investment on services because blah, blah blah??
