I think what you have here is polished aluminium with painted "lower" sections. The polished bit looks black in the photo. I am currently doing mine at the moment using the following method. Rub down the entire surface with a 3M green pad (pot scrubber thingy!) - this will remove the scratches and scuffs from the polished part and paint from the lower section. The deeper scratches take some time but is worth it. Have the whole thing anodized to match the old paint - dull silver. Have a metal polisher buff off the anodizing on the high sections to the original polished finish. This will leave a much more robust result where the paint was (and look original) Will post the results when mine are finished if you wish. |

Looks like they're aluminum with black stripes. If the aluminum is scuffed up, then find an anodizing shop that will strip & re-anodize them clear. You want what's called a 'hard coat' anodize as they get a bit of a beating. Then have the black stripes powder coated. Line up the powder coating shop & have them see the plates before they're stripped so they'll know what kind of a finish to go after. |

What would be the best way to refinish the upper and lower step plates on my 308? I need some ideas, please.
