A Belle Tire rep (Mark isn't with the dealer now) told me Cooper no longer imports Avon tires. I eml'd Avon asking for a current importer list. Does anyone have a line on a dealer who can order Avon tires? I don't want to get TRXs unless I have to.

Jeff Howe, do you know how to get Avon tires, excuse me, tyres?

Jonathan -- Do a search on "308 reproduction wheel" (AND mode in both cases) -- should get you plenty of relevant reading.
Personally, I don't like any aftermarket brands/styles on a 308, but, as long as the mechanicals are the same (108 mm bolt circle, 67 mm hub diameter, and about +11 mm offset) and the widths aren't excessive, they would work.
PS It takes some moderate fiddling to put 328 non-abs (front) wheels on a 308.
PPS welcome aboard -- but put a little info in your Profile (e.g., location -- at least continent if not country, year/model/version, etc....)

So, in the event that one DID want to go the 16 inch wheel route, do you have to find Ferrari 328 wheels or are the bolts in a configuration that you can buy other (i.e. cheaper!) brands?

(Please forgive what must seem like a stupid question from this newbie...)

BigAl,
The width & tire aspect ratio numbers (the 220 and 55 respectively) in the tire spec determine the rim to tread distance. The distance is simply:

220mm x 0.55 aspect ratio = 121mm = 4.76"

Both the Michelin TRX's and the CR28s are:
220/55R390 tires, so the tread height is identical. Both are 'V' speed rated.

BTW,The tire numbering system has changed since the 308 manuals were printed. The speed rating used to be between the profile & the tyre type letter (eg: VR = V speed rated Radial).

Subsequently, they added a 'load' rating number to go with the speed rating, so now the load/speed rating numbers/letter follow the other numbers. eg; 220/55R390 95V

Tyre Rack has a good description of all the tire spec numbers & how to interpret them.

I'm with you, I'm not competetively tracking my car, & the ~$2K entry cost for 16" wheels & 1st set of tires will buy more Avon CR28s than I expect to wear out while I own this car.

OOPS! There's a glaring typo in my previous post. the '380' s/b '390'.

Verell,
Are the CR28s the same height from the rim of the wheel to the tread as the TRXs? No need to go out and take photos. I thought if you had some already on your pc it would be nice to see them. Thanks for the offer though.
Yeah, I too found out that searching through the "Research" link doesn't hit the Tech Archives. I found your one post only by opening each archive and searching for "tire".
The 16" wheels make the car look nicer with lower profile and wider tread tires but I just can't talk myself into buying new wheels and then having an extra set laying around the garage. I have no interest in track racing so I'll go the CR28 route and post an update once I get them installed.

Barney,
Honest, It's somewhere in the Technical Q&A archives. I'm positive I posted it shortly after my CR28s arrived. But darned if I could find it, even after I figured out that searching Technical Q&A does NOT search the 'Technical Q&A Archives' which it used to do a few months ago.

BTW, in my earlier post "Last Spring" was Spring of 2001. I've now had the CR28s for 2 years.

I also just recently bought a new set of TRX's and the build date was this past December...I bought them in March. Pretty good I thought...

Where was this post a few months ago when we needed it? Damn, I would have made that a serious consideration.

Frank, I bought my TRX's from TireRack last summer and when I received them they were exactly 63 days "old" from the date of manufacture. Not sure where you're getting the info. about 15-year-old tires...

Hmm,
It looks like moving the archives to the top level of the forum has broken all the links within them. Also, searching seems to not work as well. I can't get 'search' to cough up my post that has the details about the discount, but finally found it in my FerrariList eMAIL archives:

"Thanx to Rick Reid, FerrariList members get a good price on AVON TRX tires from Belle Tire in Ohio.

Contact: Mark Redmond - Salesman
Phone: 440-735-0800
Cell Phone: 330-416-8210

I bought a set for my 308 QV last spring. The prices then were:

AVON CR28 Tires: 220/55R380 93V $136.81 ea + $42 shipping

Tell Mark you're a FerrariList member, and mention my & Rick's names as referring you to him. Mark is on the road a lot. This Belle Tire
dealer specializes in truck tires, don't be confused by that when they answer the phone. They don't stock these tires, but are willing
to special order them."

For specs goto:

http://www.avontyres.com/us/en/ProductDetails.asp?ProdType=passenger&id=137

and then click on the CR28 button under the 'o.e. replacemetn tires' column.

They arrived 2 or 3 days after I placed my order. They were drop shipped from New Jersey. They must have been fresh off the boat as they had a mfg. date only a few weeks prior to delivery!!!

Also, here's the new link to the post with a photo of a CR28, a link to the Avon Tires web site, & a bit of a discussion. The post is my #413 almost at the beginning of the thread.

RE: PHOTO OF MY CAR
I don't have a photo of my car with them on, but could take one. Basicly it will look like any other 308 with TRX tires on it. Is there a view you wanted to see in particular? I could take a photo & post it when I get home.

While the Coker TRX repros are not as good as modern designs, they are better than the original TRX tires. From what I was told by Coker, the TRX repros they make utilize modern rubber compounds which are much better that the original TRX rubber compounds. Also, I would NEVER buy NOS TRX tires as they have had to be sitting around 15+ years in a warehouse somewhere. No matter how well stored, rubber deterioates over that much time.

As a side note, one of the most common compliments of my car is the darn tires. Interesting considering the fact that the general consensus on this site is that the TRX tires are inferior to "modern" tires. I really like the TRX look myself. Supposedly they underperform the newer tires, but I would never know the difference since I'm not running my car through slaloms. Al, let us know what you end up doing.

Thanks for the replies fellas.

Verell, do you happen to have any photos of your car so I could get a look at the tires on your car? I searched and found your post about the CR28s but must have missed the post on the contact at Belle Tire. Could you post it again?

I bought a set of new Avon CR28s 205/55/VR390 from Belle Tire in Ohio for $145/tire which included shipping. They give a discount to FerrariChat & FerrariList members.

Tires arrived a week later - drop shipped from New Jersey with a date stam less than a month before I received them.

I've been driving them for just over a year, & they seem to be nice touring tires. Good wet weather traction & nothing to complain about in dry weather either. They aren't seriously sticky track tires, but I understand they're a more modern tread & compound than the Coker Michelin TRXes.

Search the archives. A year or so ago I posted the name & phone # of the contact at Belle Tire.
Also in the archives is a photo of a CR28 to give you some idea of the tread pattern.

Al, try Tirerack.com. I bought a full set of brand new TRX's from them for $800 shipped. I'm not big on reproduction anythings...so I would have probably paid twice that to get TRX's if I had to. But that's just me. You might also watch on ebay...you can find near new TRX's on there for pennies on the dollar occasionally. Good luck.

Al, the Yokohama tire referred to is the 14" V-rated tire that is now discontinued. I don't think Yokohama has ever made a metric "390" tire.

I've searched through the archives but wanted to get updated info regarding what tires fellow 308 owners use. I have original 390 wheels and am trying to decide about replacing the tires or going the 16" wheel route. I found a post from 2000 that said Discount Tire has a Yokohama tire that fits the 390 wheels for $90. Anyone have those? I'm not going the Coker $250/tire route. If I'm going to spend that much, I'll just get 16" wheels and modern rubber. FYI, I don't track race so ultra speed rated tires aren't a concern. I have an '85 Euro QV and I'm assuming bolt spread is the same as US models.
