Removing the tanks is certianly possible without engine removal (in addition I hear there is a way to do the "MAJOR SERVICE" without removing the engine, ie. remove the tanks and access to the belts is now there with engine in place - altho possibly not the water pump - but that is a story for another day). The hoses should be visible from underneath (they would be at the top corner edge of the tank where it meets the sidewall) You may have to feel around for them from the top - climb ONTO the enigne (carefully onto the tube frame), lay on the airbox, have a friend below car to guide you. We saw the hose when the car was in the air on the lift, which I know you are trying to do without. The car was raised up and down (several times) to provide the proper work position to do this (I would gather the tech didn't feel like laying on my engine white it was 6'+ in the air). As for running 2 into 1, I would advise against it (but don't always take my advice). I would change both if possible, sort of a while you are in there, why not? Soon after changing the driver's side of mine, I did the engine drop and the tech said it would be a great time to change the other one, I didn't hesitate. One last thought, we removed my oil filter to get a better view, from below. Had to install a new one after that. -Ben |

Suggestion #1, Dont Smoke u probably have to remove the engine to remove the tank. Once its fixed, my mechanic says he always slips an aluminum plate ,1/32 of an inch, under the tanks on the race cars he builds to act as a little armor |

Ben, I think you might have just hit it right on the head - the leak only seems to leak when the engine is running and seems to be coming from the top of the tank. My problem now is that the hose in question runs through the mounting bracket for the oil tank and even with the small grill by the window removed I still can't see the top of the gas tank. Is there an easy way to remove the oil tank to get access to the top of the gas tank or do I try to get the old hose off "by feel" from underneath? As a temporary fix, can both return feeds go into the return hose that feeds the passenger side tank? Any further suggestions before my journey "into the belly of the beast"? Thanks again! Pat |

Patrick - Had a similar problem with my 90TR, the leak was coming from the return hose from the FI/distribution system (there is one for each tank/bank). The rubber had gone (as does most rubber over time in contact with fuel) and then it sorta broke apart at the clamp. When we tried to tighten down the clamp, the hose just crumbled to pieces. The gas tanks are aluminum, and I'd be hard pressed to just have one start leaking, altho it is possible. This hose while is visible from underneath the car (that's where we were when trying to tighten down the clamp, on a lift) is NOT replacable from below, it's done from above. You will have to remove the "grill like" enigne cover that remains (nearest the rear windshield) once you open the normal engine cover. Do as much research as possible to find the source of the leak (hole, hose, etc.) before pulling out the tanks (which cannot be done without a lift, to my understanding). I shold also mention that my tanks were dropped 2 weeks prior to this hose going bad. UGH. As always take the necessary precautions around raw fuel + vapor. -Ben |

I seem to have a leak on the driver side gas tank. After jacking up the driver side and pulling the body pan, the leak seems to be coming from the back vertical side (maybe under the strap toward the center of the car). Anyone have experience or tips with this? I'm assuming that it has to be pulled all the way out - is this a big deal with the car on the ground (jack stands) or must it be done with a hoist? Any particular areas to look at or design weaknesses to fix while I can? Thanks in advance! Pat |
