Guys, if one of the screws it tightened down fully first (I'm sure by someone else and not you) and then they do the other screw, it might not be properly centered. If you gradually tighten both screws, then it does center itself on the mount. Likewise, if for some reason when centered on the mount it doesn't properly center to the shift stalk, you can "force" it to be just slightly misaligned to the holes but aligned to the stalk. In any case, we're only talking about perhaps 1/2mm, but that's often enough to make a difference.

I also don't see how this is adjustable. The tapered screws keep it in one position.

I have noticed marked improvement in shifter operation lubricating the assembly that is below the shifter gate. I just added two or three drops of motor oil and it loosened up nicely. The reverse-lockout function is more effective too.

I'm confused about the gate adjustment. In first gear, it's true that the lever rests against the right side of the 1st gear slot; I can move it, say, 1mm side to side to get a "clink clink" sound.

But, my gate is certaintly not adjustable; how could it be? It's bound by screws on the top and the bottom, and there's one position that the gate "finds" as you tighten down the screws...

Am I missing something?

Peter,
Don't sweat the type of lube too much. While I like Super Lube, I'm sure any grease would work fine.

Peter: My pleasure. The advice came from my own experience with the same issue some years back... it took me way TOO LONG to figure out why my shifting was more difficult, and it was a simple a fix as adjusting the gate.

Well Mike, as usual, you are correct. The alignment in second gear was fine but in first the shifter was touching the right side of the gate, I realigned it as suggested (by loosening the bolts, moving the plate and retightening). It shifts even better now. I do think that many cars will benefit from lubricating the gates because the lever still touches the gate during shifting even with the alignment. I haven't been able to locate the Super Lube yet, but will try it when I find it. Thanks for the help.

Thanks Mike, I'll check it in first/second tonight.

Check it not in neutral, but when it's in first or second or where ever it was that it was binding. It shouldn't...

Thanks for the feedback. The shifter looks perfectly centered within the gate in the neutral position -- does this mean it is adjusted correctly? The shifting wasn't really bad, just not as effortless as when I first got the car -- but I was really amazed at the difference after waxing the gate and shifter. The Super Lube will probably work much better than the wax, I will give it a try.

I readjusted the linkage center point when replacing shift seals and it made a huge difference on 2nd gear when cold.

Peter,
I apply a little bit of Permatex Super Lube, a Teflon based grease. Just a very light coat on the areas of contact.

Maybe your shift gate is just very slightly misaligned. You might loosen the two screws a bit and wiggle it around and see if you can tighten it down in a more favorable position.

The shifting on my Mondial had slowly become slightly difficult so that I had to think about shifting around the gates on the 1-2 upshift. I also noticed there was a slight squeeking sound from the gate during the shift. Assuming friction was the problem, I applied automotive wax to the insides of the gate and the lower part of the shift lever. This made a huge difference in the shifting and it now shifts very smoothly. I recommend trying this if you have any difficulty shifting. The wax seems to be fairly durable, but perhaps somebody can advise if there is a better product for this.
