Verell and David were right. The left switch was not making contact when the door is opened. But, as warned, I broke the switch while pulling the panel out enough to get some pliers on it. I'm not sure there was a way to pull it and the wire out of the rubber boot without breaking it. Live and learn.

I will repair this switch asap. I think I can make it work fine just like Verell did.

I grounded the wire to the car and the door light came on and the overhead light. It also has a delay for turning off after closing the door. So, I just need to fix the switch amd I will be all set.

Drat,
Forgot I was supposed to check my lights & report in. Dave's covered it tho.

BTW, if the contact cleaner doesn't help, get a stainless steel bristled'toothbrush' from your local hw store or auto parts store. The stainess does a very nice job of stripping the tarnish off the brass the contacts are made of.

After cleanint them, I like to coat brass or copper contacts with an anti-oxidation paste sold in tubes for using aluminum house wiring with copper screw terminals. It's also good for coating battery posts after you've cleaned them to ensure the connection doesn't oxidize.

Be VERY GENTLE when handling the door switches. The spade contact on the back of the switch is held on by a fiber washer that's very brittle with age. Hold the base of the contact with needle nose pliers when removing the slid-on connector. Otherwise you'll most likely break the switch.

My 'rebuild' was a ss brushing, then I had to work all of the broken fiber washer out from under the rivited post. Luckily I was able to find a similar sized fiber washer in my local TrueValue. I sliced one edge of the fiber washer with a razor blade, then worked it on top of the contact & under the rivited end of the post. Once I had the ends of the fiber washer butted together & it was well under the rivited end, I glued the ends together with epoxy. Also gave the entire washer & rivited end a smear of epoxy for good measure.

Jihn,
Verell is correct here. The lights come on together. Your left door switch is inop., but can be fixed. Often times removing it and giving it a good blast of eletrical contact cleaner will do the trick. The dome light sounds like it may have a break in the wires from the door pin switches.

Thanks Verell- that would be great.

My overhead light also is inop with either door being opened, but you can turn it on with the switch- so the bulb is good.

Your car and mine "should" work the same- I look forward to hearing about your car. If it's just the drivers side door switch- maybe I can rebuild it like you did and repair the overhead light at the same time!

Also- Thanks Verell for all the links you posted in one of my posts earlier- they were great. I look forward to hooking up some day to talk cars and check out your shop. You are only 1.5 hrs from Portland or so.

Hmm,
I'll check my '82 Euro & see what it does.

I just rebuilt my driver's side switch & the interior 'dome' light is working reliably for the 1st time since I got the car. Goes on when either door is opened, & closes 10 sec after the last door is closed.

Think I saw both door lights come on when either door is opened, but I'll double check & post.

84 Euro 308- the red lights on the edges of the doors are acting weird. When the passenger door is opened- the passenger side light comes on. If the driver door is open, or shut, at the same time- the light on the driver's side also comes on.
If the driver door is opened, but passenger is closed- nothing happends. Is it just the switch in the jamb of the drivers side, or should these lights only come on when their respective doors are opened. Why would the drivers side light come on when the passenger door is opened?

Does this question make sense? I guess the simple question is do both lights come on when either door is opened, or do they act alone?

I just bought the car, and it's been like this since I've owned it.

Maybe a relay issue?
