I thought about this and took note of the comments and worked this problem backwards. I put the TDC exactly on the alignment mark and looked at the cam marks, they are within half the width of the notch, so probably less than a degree out. This is obviously OK, I am sure the difference comes from the 2:1 ratio of the flywheel to the cams and the larger diameter of the flywhel. I know I have not moved the belts and the car ran great before, so I am comfortable all is OK !! Just that front belt to do now !!!!! |

Just a note: The marks made on the camshafts for alignment are only a guide to get the timing close to correct and are rarely accurate. If you have replaced the belt and are sure nothing moved and those cam marks are not exactly aligned, I would not be worried. A more accurate mark is the notch made on the back end of the camshaft made by the Factory assembler who performed the first cam adjustment which you can check by removing the rear cover plates. Factory procedure for adjusting the cams is a little elaborate with actually checking with a degree wheel when the intake valve opens and the exhaust valve closes and not relying on the cam marks. The procedure for the adjustment is listed in the Factory workshop manual and honestly left best to your trusted technician. Best regards, Jim |

Put the flywheel on The Zero Mark and recheck and adjust as neccesary. The engines have enough play in the drive system that the marks may still align. |

I have a real dilema , hopefully someone can help me here. I have an 87 Euro GTS and I am doing the belt change, I have completed installation of the rear bank OK, I match marked pulleys locked cams etc. and I am sure that I got the belt on exactly as before. When I first lined up the cams to the cap marks I didn't take a great deal of notice of the exact alignment of the TDC mark, I could see the PM 1 4 mark opposite the pointer but paid most attention on getting the cam marks exact. Now when I look at the mark I see that the pointer is in fact exactly aligned on the vertical part of the 4 ?? So I removed the front bank cam cover to check alignment and I find that the cams are exactly lined up with the cap marks just like the front bank cams. So since I have not touched this bank yet this confirms that both banks have matched timing and also means that the belt I installed has not moved from original timing. Now my big dilema, IS THE TIMING CORRECT WITH THE POINTER LINING UP ON THE 4 ??? If it is not correct it must have been like that previously, I ran the car for a few hundred miles and all seemed fine. I have also rotated the engine by hand several times and everything sounds OK. Does anyone have any recommendations please ! |
