Omar- David is right, don't sweat it. When my 328 was in at Ferrari of Wash. for its annual service, they highly recommended switching to synthetic in lieu of the Valvoline that I, and they, had been using in the past. I told them I was wary, due to all the 'leak' problems one hears about with the use of synthetics. They went as far as to tell me that if it leaked at all or if I was unhappy with it for ANY reason, they would switch it back at no charge. I hesitatingly agreed. The result so far = no leaks at all and the car definitely runs a bit cooler. Go for it, you won't be disappointed.

Omar, I believe it's 90 weight. Go here and click on Gear Lubricants at the top. Then click on MT-90. It sure made my tranny shifting smoother... good luck! http://www.redlineoil.com/products.htm

BTW, measure carefully. I have never been able to get more than 9 quarts in during a change. I usually, but in 8 quarts, start it up and let it warm a bit, then shut down, wait several minutes and check. One more quart usually puts it on the money. I usually only got 8 quarts in with my previous carb 308. |

Omar, I wouldn't sweat it. Everyone has their preference when it comes to oil. The Mobil 1 products work great, no problem there. The leak thing is wierd, I have never had leak problems with my previous 308 or my current 328 using synthetics, but both cars got a "major service" right after purchase, so maybe the new seals made the difference. I personally prefer synthetics, and use whatever happens to be on sale. Right now, you can get one gallon (four quarts)jugs of Shell Rotella T full synthetic oil in 5w-40 on sale for $12.89 each at Walmart ($3.25 quart). Just changed my oil with it tonight for the 2nd consecutive time (3k change intervals), with no problems, works fine. |

Ok, I just picked up 11 qrts (1 extra) Mobil 1 15W50...guess I should go back and return it? Ok what do the 328ers (and 308ers) recommend is best? Oh and BobD, MT-90, what is the spec weight of that? Is it a 75W90 type? |

I'm also running Castrol 20w50 in my '85 308. I had tried Mobil 1 15w50, but the synthetic leaked a lot more than the straight petroleum oil. |

John, My manual also says 10-40. There may have been a change somewhere along the line. There were some internal parts changed late in the series, but none I would suspect to affect oil weight. No bearings or anything like that. Dave |

I've had two different mechanics tell me to stay away from using synthetics in the 328 engine (and I assume 308). I'm also running Castrol GTX 20/50. BTW, I had the 30K done about 6 wks ago and my mechanic used Red Line MT-90 in the gearbox. It shifts so much smoother now... really unbelievable!!! Give it a try! |

Valvoline VR1 Racing Oil, 20w50. The oil will be changed every 2,000 miles. Some might say over kill but when I spend most of my outings keeping up with 355's, 360's or my friends TR the car gets put through it's paces. Not necesarily beat but I doubt there is any carbon build up in the engine. Clean is good. DJ 1978 308 GTS |

Castrol GTX 20W50 is being used on mine (not to say it is the best though). |

15W50 should be fine for a 308 or 328, either synthtic or dino oil. Even 20W50. |

I am guessing synthetic, but what weight? The manual recommends 10w50..and I can't find it anywhere. Would a Syn 15W50 be better or worse? How much should I put? (I am guessing the amount in the manual is optimal, but I might as well ask) Thanks for the help! |
