Ken I presume this would be without the cost of the parts ? It doesn't sound that bad, but then again I presume a Ferrari shop might charge more. And I suppose the often heard "Oh we found this and did that also" plus all those little adders that seem to run up the bill could make it a good bit more.
I am also cutting my own gaskets to save more money that I would prefer to use to buy fuel, well it's expensive here in Europe :-)

Paul:

I was told that a valve adjustment on my 308QV would run about $500 from an independent. That is at $90 per hour.

Omar
I just did the valve clearances on my 328 a couple of hours ago. Look in the owners manaul to see the frequency required, I have only owned my car a couple of months so I decided to do them along with changing the cam belts. Once you get the cam covers off it is a pretty simple job, it took me less than 1/2 hour. Al you need is a set of feeler gages or shims to check the clearances. Luckily all mine were within tolerance so I don't need to change shims, but even if you did need to change a couple it would only take another hour I would guess. If you have worked on any car before then this is not a tough job to do, I removed the deck lid to get access, it would be a tough job if you did not do that. No need to change gaskets unless you pull the covers to do this job.
I would be interested to know how much this job would cost to see how much I just saved !!

How often should they be done?

How does one determine whether his/her values need to be adjusted/gaskets need replacing?

If one has the tools of a local garage, are they a DIY job? If not, how much do they usually run?

thanks for the help!
