A MAJOR thanks to Tom, Andrew, Russ and Bill for your thoughts. If I can get this thing by the "$300" CA smog, then I'm off to the races! I'll let you know what the problem turns out to be when discovered. Thanks again, John |

Also check for oil leaking into a distributor. I just bought a T due for major service and there was an occasional miss. drive for away and it's gone. Let it sit for a while and crack it up and it's back. When I did the major on my 3.2 I could definitely tell oil was getting into a distributor. I first thought it was plugs or ignition wires. a quick check is to pull and clean/inspect the distributors. Then drive and see if there is a miss. If not wait for the miss to come back and then pull the distributor again and inspect. Bill |

I'm no expert, but on first hearing: 1. The mixture is leaning out causing the popping and loss of power: Fuel filter, pump, dirty fuel or injectors. If your 86 is a real Euro, you're off the hook on the frequency valve as Euros do not have them (unless a Ch car). 2. Plug extenders suck. Check each one of them for a good connection and no burn through pinholes. My experience with ignition failures though is that it is an annoying miss or an entire bank dies rather than flatulance. 3. Ferraris have the worst electrical connections in the known universe. Check these. 4. Ah, yes, I remember now - My 3.2 had intermittant power loss and popping once due to a failed Kjet relay in the trunk - the one with the fuse in it. Don't have my books here (packed - I'm moving) but look at the secondary electrical board in the trunk and check the fuse and relay. Shake it a bit - if it rattles, take it to a NAPA or Bosch store and replace it. 5. Outside chance that fuel accumulator is poopy. Hope this helps get you started. Good luck - I'm with you in spirit. John... Tom's headed in the right direction, but you might wanna check your fuel filter first. Most obvious thing for those symptoms. |

Sounds like you have an ignition system break down somewhere. I would check all your basic ignition parts first: ignition Caps(check for cracking),rotors(check for high resistance) spark plugs and extenders and wires. If all check out o.k. then it's time to go after the fuel system, something like a faulty injector or the frequency injector relay is cutting in and out. |

Hello, my '86 Euro Mondial is making a distressing sound! Any thoughts on what it could be? About every 30 miles, there is a very loud "popping," or "back-firing" sound. Each fart sounds like someone shot a hole in the muffler (which is original OM). Power is reduced significantly (not electrically), the car accelerates slowly, and it will "fart" about 15-20 times. Then, power will come back online, and everything seems fine. It has started while I was in 1st/2nd gear driving, and also on the highway. Any ideas? Maybe losing a bank of cylinders, bad muffler, or something else? |
