Another difference between dry/wet sump engines. Whereas a wet sump should always be checked with the engine off at least a few minutes to allow oil to drain back into the pan, a dry sump should be checked with the engine running a while. Failure to do so could result in the gross overfilling Ben suggests, since oil can drain down into the engine sump, leaving a misleadingly low level in the sump tank.

Best regards,
Andy

PS Anybody with pics of a dry sump 308 engine, showing the oil cooler mounting.... please, please, PLEASE email to me... [email protected]

Neal and Ben... A dry sump engine is totally different from a wet, in terms of "fill level". A wet sump can have problems overfilling, a dry sump could care less, since the tank is merely a reservoir, with the actual engine sump being constantly sucked out. However................

Ben.. the problem you describe is WAY overfilling the oil tank, to where the oil level is above the vent fittings. And yeah... that would mess up your Viagra hopes, lol.

In my F355, it generally takes 9.25-9.5 quarts on an oil+filter change, even though the manual indicates that it holds 10 quarts. I learned this the harder way--by overfilling and belching smoke as the crankcase ventilation system provided fresh oil to the intake system. yech. I now fill 2 quarts under and inch (sic) my way to the middle of the indicator.

Too much oil in the TR (dry sumped) engine is a problem, ask me how I know (PO), it can get like a blender and eventally feed back into the crancase venting and into the air intake. I had some mess to clean out.

-Ben

P.S. TR should be just above the min level immediately after hot engine shutdown. YMMV

Why can't you just take a hand pump/siphon and insert it where the dip stick goes into the oil tank???

A little easier right??

I would think too much oil and any engine would be a problem - you are talking worst case 50 bucks if you need to drain all the oil - just do it, if you don't you could be looking at a complete rebuild

It should drain any excess out through the overflow tube.

just changed oil in 348 and may have put too much in - 11 qts - and now dip stick is slightly above max mark. pressure gauge might seem to read higher also esp on accel. im sure i already know answer but do i have to drain some out?
