Byron: If you haven't yet resolved this to your satisfaction and want to find the original 348/355 Challenge Halon manual bottle, try www.autosparacing.com. I ordered one yesterday for my 348C (in the interest of originality). |

AFFF is the best stuff because it prevents fire relites. Halon does not. Halon does not work as well in cars with windows open. All the new guys have gone to AFFF. Check the sctioning bodies you race with for the required systems. OMP is lame. I tried to order their system and basically got a run around they fouled up my order and I basically said forget them. Later I found out OMP is being sued becasue their system did not work in a car because of a defectvie flop tube design preventing complete expulsion of the AFFF. OMP was the oem supplier it is the most expensive system on the market and the OMP FErrari unit is # 606 I think. It is silver aluminium with electronic trigger. 1) I don't trust italian electronics 2) OMP custoerm service is just like Ferrari even in USA, 3) OMPWINS.com and OMPUSA.com both have the fire systems conspicuously missing from their wedsites which used to be there. Well the rumors of the lawsuit must be true? They have stopped sell fire systems in the USA? Check these guys out. They seem to have a very interesting system. However, I suspect them. They will send me no data just lots of impressive talk over the phone. http://www.firecharger.com/ |

Rob et al What does one of these systems cost for a bottle, plumbing, and manual trigger? Secondly, where do the nozzles generally point? For example, the nauticalfire URL above contains a pretty neat (to my novice view) kit. It has three lines. I'd feel comfortable I could do the wrenching work to install the kit but would need guidance on where to install the nozzles. I assume you'd want one pointing to/above each fuel tank and another around the carb bank. However, I'm no designer. Thoughts? Philip |

Call them on the systems, they used to sell them, perhaps can still order, just not stock. If you need authenticity, OMP is it. Systems will cover the engine. You'll need 10 lb for a system. You could install the bottle in the trunk. |

Rob, Is the halon system for track use only? Can I have a "lightweight" system that is manually triggered for on AND off road use? (I really don't think I want a huge 10lb bottle sitting in my passenger footwell area!) Was the system just for the interior, or did the cars get the engine bay prepped as well? If that's the case, I definitely agree that the "system" is the better approach and would offer the most amount of fire protection overall. Checked out driving impressions - doesn't look like they have any extinguishers... but lots of other goodies! Thanks. |

The OE 348 Challenge extinguisher was simply a Halon bottle, bolted to the passerger footwell, made by OMP, I think a 5 kg bottle. Many owner/drivers upgraded to a system, but it would be dealer installed. It could be either electrically triggered or cable (manual). HIGHLY recommend a 10 lb. minimum system. Spend the $$$, get it professionaly installed if you don't feel comfortable. If you want authenticity, the OMP systems are available in the US. Try these guys: Driving Impressions. |

The discussion in the main board (http://www.ferrarichat.com/discus/messages/21/276342.html?1056476144) has sparked some curiosity to my mind. When I purchased my 348 challenge, I was told that it was formerly set up with the Halon system. What does this really mean? Does this cover the interior or engine bay? (or both?) I am looking to purchase a small Halon extinguisher for the interior. Would it just be better for me to re-install a bottle for the entire car instead? Any input would be appreciated. Thanks. |
