Hey Kelly,
That sounds a lot better than O.. F.....
I resemble the old...

After all, I got 2 bronzes in one night last winter for my NASTAR ski team! My team mates figgured me to be 10 years younger than my calendar age. Should have taken bets..

We'll, it's clear I don't get no respek here.

Guess I'll have to go hassle my son. Just looked out the window & saw him in the driveway putting a little bright red battery w/cylindrical cells into his '93 Rx7.

Why do I think I'm not convinceing anyone... ;{

Good naturedly, ;)

BTW, that Champion XLT sounds interesting. I may look into it next time I need a batt. for a seasonal car.

Verell,
Use what works for you, that cannot be argued.

The advantage of the new "spiral wound" cell technology is that they have a bit longer reserve capacity and more importantly a longer (manufacture claim) service life. The most recent tests by Consumers Reports seem to back that. If you can get an Optima for $85 to $99 and can really get a few more years service life out of it, then that would seem to be a very good value in my book. Plus the have other advantages such as a being totally sealed. Even if the case is cracked, they will not leak electrolyte. And servicing a battery to add water on a Ferrari is a major pain the you know what. :-)

ChrisF,
re:"Being a dual purpose Cranking/Deep-Cycle Battery it tolerates cranking, intermittant use, storage periods, frequent charging, etc."
I'm with you, that's the best match for the way most of us use these cars. I use RV/Deep Cycle batterise in my other cars that have seasonal use.

For years I only bought DieHards. However, I've been unable to tell the difference in cranking power between the much cheaper RV/Deep Cycle batteries & the DieHards, and the DieHards really don't like being discharged for any period of time.

Spend your money on the fancy batteries if you want to, I'll use it to restore something else on the car.

Don,

It's the Optima 34/78 Red Top (Part # 8004-003). Protect the fender when you're doing the change. The hold-down bracket will just barely engage the battery. Just check the battery for stability after you've tightened the bolt. It should be OK.

Get the bigger one, the extra width fits fine. Also, make sure you don't buy a battery with both side terminals and top terminals. You only need the normal top terminals. The unused side terminal plastic caps will hit against the front sway bar -- which will flex in operation and could eventually short out the unused positive side terminal after crushing its plastic cap.

BTW, these engines crank pretty easily as they are only 3 liters displacement with low compression -- so huge Cold Cranking Amp specs are immaterial.

Kind Regards, Chris

I have heard good things about the Red Top and I have a Pep Boys close by so I'll snag one. Anyone know the proper size off hand? I'm kind of a beginner wrench so anything I should be careful of when changing it out?

Thanks all.

I recently bought a top of the line Sears Die Hard and I'm very happy with it. I start my car about once a week and it never even gives a hint of being weak. About $100 installed.

I have always used Interstate batteries in all my cars. I thought everyone used this brand in their Ferrari.

I'm using a Champion XLT (Exide) Blue Marine Dual Purpose Battery I bought from Sam's Club for $130. It is the same spiral cell sealed technology as the Optima but made by Exide. Being a dual purpose Cranking/Deep-Cycle Battery it tolerates cranking, intermittant use, storage periods, frequent charging, etc.

It works for me.

Kind Regards, Chris

Archives will confirm that the Optima red top is the way to go. Costco now carries Optima red tops for $99. If you can really get one at Pep Boys for $85 do that, it's a steal!

Most places charge $120.

Hi all -

I think my 1978 308 needs a battery. Any suggestions on which one I should snag or any other suggestions? Thank you.
