I don't see any problem with the ecu area. BTW the surging occurs during warmup also. The frequency valve buzzes. It idles very poorly when cold. Before the fuel treatment it idled good when cold and poorly when hot. Maybe the injector filters are clogged. I just received the new injectors and will install them tomorrow.

I'm still interested in the physical dimentions of the thermostat. Anybody got those handy??

A shorting 02 (lambda) sensor can cause an engine to feel like a "miss" or "skip" when driving.

I have noticed some mouse evidence around the ignition boxes. I cleaned all that up but I didn't thouroughly check the ecu side. Maybe my little friend just moved. Haven't checked the voltage of the o2 sensor. I'll let you know more tomorrow.

Keith -- Have you looked at the (voltage) input signal to the lambda system (i.e., the O2 sensor output)? It will probably just tell you what you already know (things aren't right), but perhaps it might give a clue.

Remove the right side rear trunk panel, under the carpet, and see if the relay panel, and ecu has been under water. The antenna leaks water into this compartment, and can goof things up bad. If there is signs of past, or current water problems, you may well have found the problem. See if the frequency valve buzzes at idle.

It looks a though the pump is ok. When I say lean condition I mean it improves with rpm . This car at 7000 rpm is very sweet! It seems to be leaner the lower the rpm goes, at throttle almost closed it breaks up badly. Off idle to medium throttle missing/surging. Filter was replaced not too long ago, before I bought the car..

I haven't taken the advice of the Probst book and dwell checked the Lambda, but I will try that also. I gotta find a dwell meter first..

A bunch!

In fact the car absolutely will not run right without the Lambda System working.

All..
I have been wrestling with a surge/miss on my 85 308. I have swapped/checked/replaced all parts in the ignition. Can't find any problems. Gets worse as engine warms up. Seems to be lean and uneven, balky, touchy throttle. I did notice some change in running after serious fuel treatment (Techron). I will be receiving new fuel injectors an Friday.

In the past I have worked on VW Rabbits with the same injection system. Never saw a problem like this. I have the gauges to check the fuel pressures. I didn't see a problem there. I'm going to check again this weekend.

My real question is about the cold start injector. Can it cause these moderate problems? It doesn't seem to be leaking. And how much of a problem can the Lambda circuit cause?

I'll listen to all who care to respond. This one has me a bit stumped. The injectors seem to be original so I thought replacing them all with the brass ones couldn't hurt. Car has 42k miles.

I want to fix this so I can drive it in this 95 degree heat. Also, does anbody have the physical dimensions of the factory thermostat. I'm thinking about messing around with the 308's cooling woes. The car should not run at 110c, with a new water pump and clean radiator with properly running fans. Emmissions or not. It could be my lean condition, but I still want to look into a thermostat..

Thanks in advance!
