I am lucky. My 550 with 38k miles still does not use oil between the 3k mile change. |

I think Neal's right, shouldn't be too complicated, even with Dave's method. But, it's good to know that oil doesn't get gravy hot. THanks for the confirmation on that one! --Dan |

just had this in my 348 and was last weeks fchat post on this. most advice was to drain the 2 extra qts out. just did it with suction hand pump thru reservoir. easy enough for peace of mind |

Use a glass one! Seriously, oil temps are usually below oven temps for gravy. I asked my wife...

Dood, if it were me...I would use a turkey baster or something to suck some out of the sump tank (the part where the dipstick is) when the engine is warm & has just been shut off. |

Hello, Overfilling the crankcase can actually be more harmful than underfilling. |

interesting, willis. the fact that i didn't read ANY manuals though is probably a bigger problem :-). i've been topping off engine oil for decades. i guess what i need to know is whether i've caused a problem and need to get it fixed before i drive the beast to within an inch of its life. doody. |

Best thing to do is to take the car to the dealer and have the tech give you a lesson on the correct way to do this. Why? Because the owner's manual for reading the levels are different from the shop manual (this is the case on the 360). Shop manual instructions are way more detailed on the procedures and proper level reading. I routinely check the levels but will not fill the fluids myself.

apologies for the clueless question. my 550 needed an oil top off. i'd never put any in before, and didn't read the manual. i put in two litres of the "liquid gold" shell helixe ultra 5W40 unobtanium. it probably needed 1.5 litres. worst case it only needed 1 litre. the dipstick when warm reads above the MAX line by about 1/2 to 3/4 the distance between the MIN and MAX line. at a minimum, i assume i should watch my oil pressure to make sure it doesn't blow anything? the filler cap is on real tight :-). at a maximum, should i get some drained? or is this not a big deal? thanks all. doody. |
