I replaced the idler bearing assembly and belt of course, on the rear bank yesterday. The old belt was off by 3 teeth but apparently no damage. I also checked the valve lash and was within specs. The 30K service was done in 1999 w/ 36K miles. The car now has 46K with 6K put on by me in the last year and a half.

I can tell you I was worried about potential damage until I had it running again late yesterday. I know 3 teeth doesn't sound like much but I don't know how close the valves were coming to the pistons before!

Wow, good you got it then. I think it will be alright though, just a gut feeling about it. From what I have gathered about these cars it is quite common for the pistons to get kissed by the valves and I would think you would have to be really winding it to damage them to the point of replacement. I know the valves shouldn't be hitting and in an ideal world they never would, but my point is I think the setup is pretty stout.

Well, I found my chirp that I wrote about several months ago, It did go away for a while and then started back up as more of a quiet, intermittant rattle. Last monday I got about a block from home and it changed to a loud rattle and pinging sound. This time I was ready to start removing the drive belts one at a time as suggested. I removed the inner fender liner and there was the rear timing belt cover with the idler pulley bearing in pieces. The shields, retainers and seals were gone and/or loose, hanging out the hole. The bearing still turned but with no retainer certainly had more clearance.

Hopefully it didn't jump any teeth and damage the valves. It did run OK for a few minutes until I got it back.

I guess I'll be doing my belt change and valve adjustment at the same time.
