Yep it cant be done you just have to pray to god you have the oil in the car so that when you start it up and get it warm you dont wreck anything! I have made it a habit to check it each time I stop the car after driving, this way I know there is oil in the car if there is no big puddle underneath it when I start it up the next time I take it out.

So a prestart oilcheck can't really be done on a 348? I guess you should check it after driving; then the next day, if there's not 2 gallons of oil on the ground under the car, you're ok to start?

This has always seemed curious to me.

On the 348, the oil dipstick is on the oil tank which is in the extreme right rear corner of the car (part no. 39 on drawing), not on the engine block. When the car is cold there is less oil in the tank than when it is warm because, as you noted, most of the oil is sitting in the crankcase.

Scott, If you checked the oil cold , before you added the oil,the oil level should have been higher because the oil out of the oil coolers has drained down in the crankcase at that point. It is correct though to check within 2or3 mins. after reaching normal operating temps to get a true reading. Just curious.

Please dont do what I did when I got my spider and measure the car cold then add loads of oil .... phewwww risky moment that was when all i could see out the back was smoke. I was real lucky that my car recovered from it. I now rn it for 10-15 mins screww the oil cap down and measure the level.

It should be screwed down to get an exact reading according to Lake Forrest Sports Cars and Ferrari of Denver. I had the same question and had to ask as well. It really doesnt make a difference though on the dip stick....only about half a centimeter. Hope this help my fellow 348 owner! :0)

The owners manual recommends that the engine be run till the oil is at normal operating temperature and then to stop the engine and check the level which should be in the middle of the minimum and maximum level markers.

However it does not say if the dip-stick should be screwed down or simply placed on the threads without screwing down. I have already had 2 differing opinions from Ferrari "experts". Any ideas?
