Thanks Mike. I'll get under the car later today and see if I can't pull the 'wire passage guide' out. I'm pretty sure thats whats stopping it. I'll loosen it with a thin screw driver then I'll try to get to the back side of the guide with a dental pick and see if it will pull out.
Thanks again...

Lou, if I remember correctly, that insert is rubber, to keep debris out of the tube. On a 308/GT4 it is part #105369 (passafilo - wire passage guide). I replaced my clutch cable a few months ago and it has a similar insert, and was definately rubber.

You may have to run a very thin screwdriver around the edge, between the guide and the tube to get it loose, then grab it radially with a pair of pliers and twist it out.

Thanks Mike and Steve for your input. Today I got under the car and looked into the steel tube that the small diameter cable travels through from the pedal to engine. It looks like there is a small insert in the tube by the pedal area which reduces the ID of the outer tube. It looks like it would work like a bushing. I tried to pull it out but it wouldn't budge. It's that small insert that is preventing me from pulling the cable which still has the ends on through the tube.
How come it's the little stupid things that cause the most grief?

I've replaced throttle cables on a 308/GT4 and on a 246. both broke at the firewall, so I used the "tie a strong string at the engine end, pull from the front, pull new cable from front to back using string" method.

lou -- I'm not quite following your description of what's needed. I believe the cable and the casing (the outer covering) are considered a single PN (i.e., you can't really buy just the central cable with the male thread end fittings unswagged). You still have to "fish" the whole new cable/casing down whatever path necessary in the chassis so the usual "tie rope to old - pull out -- tie rope to new -- pull back" method can be helpful (although most times manufacturers are clever enough to add access such that a new cable/casing assembly can just be "pushed and then pulled occasionally" into place -- F got this right on the 308 clutch cable IMO). I didn't have the pleasure of replacing the throttle cable on my ex-308, but I'd suggest you buy/examine the new parts to help size-up/understand the project.

Maybe you guys just missed my earlier posting so I'll give it another try. I'm sure the answer is out there! How do I remove the throttle cable from the steel tube that runs along the frame? I removed the fork and locknut that attaches to the pedal which leaves a small screw end. On the engine side what remains is a larger sleeve and screw end. I assume the smaller end which was on on the pedal end would be able to be pulled through the tube but it seems to large in diameter. Am I not pulling hard enough or do I have to cut the end off then reinstall a new crimped end when I replace the cable? Anyone know the right way to pull this through?
