peter -- Have you verified the two major upstream power sources (+12V to ECU, +12V to RH and LH coil/power modules) are OK/present?
Send me an email and I'll send back some information ([email protected])

We tried grounding out the coil ht output but still no firing. Can smell fuel vapour from the exhausts so the problem is definately spark. Have taken out the engine management box from the inside of the inner left rear wing, took it apart and all looks perfect, checked both the magnetic pickups both read around 720 ohmns so these seem ok, checked wires on plugs all ok. Just trying to find a company who we can take the ecu box to for testing. All suppliers that we have contacted so far will not allow us to plug in the new box to test to see if it is actually the ECU. I just dont want to spend the 800 for the box to find that the old one is ok and the problem somewhere else. Will keep you posted to the progress

Hay Petter
Just want to clarify what I did. First I unplugged the main coil wire from the coil and plugged in the spare. I fastened the other end to sit about an 1/8 away from the frame of the car. Turned the key and the engine sputtered as if it was ready to start. The second time I had to do this the engine actually started with the spare grounding out. I immediately turned it off. Reconnected the main coil back and it fired up with no problem. Just by coincidence this happened again to me last night. This time I tried what Jeff said and pulled both coil wire off and pushed them both back in all the way. Tried to start it and nothing would fire up, so I tried the spare wire thing and away she went. Now I can't explain why his is happening nor explain why grounding the coil seems to make it work but it does on my car. It might be time to change my coils just like Dino suggested. Hope this helps. Good luck.

Thanks for your replies, i only checked spark on the right bank, will check the left bank to see if there is any spark there but my assumption is that if there was any spark on the left bank the engine would be trying to start but only on 6 cylinders. The engine was completely dead just turning over. It seemed at the time that both coils were not firing which lead me to believe that the main electronics controling the coils were not working. Now that the car is back in the UK complete with damage by the car haulier i will recheck everything again and try out Luigi suggestion of shorting the coil output to earth. Thanks again for those who replied

I have an 87 TR....more than likely the coil or coils are bad. I have had several fail over the years. They are reletively inexpensive to buy and VERY easy to replace. Best of luck...Ciao...Dino

I have an 87TR and this happened to me twice. I'll drive the car all day and then out of the blue the engine will turn over but wont fire up. I bought a spare coil lead wire from the local auto store and now keep in the car. Everytime this happened I would unplug the lead coil wire from the driver side plug in the spare and ground it out. Once I do this the car trys to start. I plug the car main coil wire back in and it starts. I've had to do this twice and both times it worked. I've tried taking the main wire out and cleaning them and put it back in and it still didn't fire up. As soon as I ground the one, Presto I was back in business. That's my two cents.

This may sound stupid, but make sure the coil wires are pushed upward and seated to the coils. My TR used to occasionally loose fire on one bank because the passenger's side coil wire kept vibrating downward out of the coil, but it would still be held in place by the boot. Couldn't tell by looking, had to physically push to make sure it was making good contact.

Im new to group with an 85 Testarosa owned by my friend who is currently having problems and would like any advise on diagnosing the problem before i take it to the ferrari dealer. Drove to lemans where it broke down on the 1st day, lost all power then 2 backfires. pulled a plug lead to check spark but nothing, Checked 12v power to coil regulator input ok, fuses in front of car ok, pulled plug on electronic box on inner rear wing left hand side, switched 12v present. can anybody inform me of any inputs to the electronic box that i should be checking, assume there is a magnetic device which will pulse a milly volt signal but where is it or are there other things i should check. Internal fuses in the electronics box pherhaps. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
