Guys, On the 348 is the dipstick for the gear box oil the "bolt" type thing that sits directly on top about 7 inches to the left of the "ferrari pumpkin ball"......Great description, huh? |

Next time you change the oil, sacrific a quart of oil by flushing the box before you fill it for good. |

Yes, I had some very fine shavings. The total amount was about the size of a single pea. |

Did you have any metal shavings on your drain plug? |

Don, Very true. But that huge 19mm filler plug is very easy to reach with the air filter housing removed. Also, I can set a normal size funnel right into the filler hole. No need for a long narrow tube down to the dip stick hole. It took about 30 minutes to change the gear box oil. |

Why not drain the oil and fill via the dip stick? All you need is the 10 mm to drain and a 12 mm socket (If I recall) to remove the check level dip stick |

Instead of paying $30.00 to $45.00 on a 19mm hex socket that I might use once a year, I bought a $9.00 19mm L style allen wrench from a local tool supplier. With the long part of the allen wrench inserted in the filler plug I used a 3/4" wrench to turn the allen wrench and loosen the plug. It worked great. BTW, I used Redline 75w90NS. |

Tom is correct, 19mm I made a homemade wrench by putting a 19mm lug nut into a socket with a large enough piece sticking out as to not round off the plug corners. It's not a bad idea in certian cases to hit plugs with sealing washers underneath with 1 or 2 hard blows to flatten the sealing ring a little more thus releasing the grip. |

19 mm for the huge plug on the top. But I put a home made reducer on the end of a hose and fill it through the hole for the dip stick. |

For the gear box oil filler plug on a 348. I know the drain plug is 10 or 12mm. But, the filler plug is huge, something like 20-24mm. I have searched earlier threads and have not found a clear answer. Thanks.... |
