Thank you guys, I finally got through to a Ferrari technician and he confirmed the numbers and the steps you mentioned (9.5 Quarts, and 0.17 pints for the transfer case). Since it was slow filling I have two nozzles going, one into the transfer case fill hole, and one directly into the gearbox fill hole. It took the whole 9.5 quarts for the oil to fill out the gearbox. I then put back the fill hole plug and proceeded to add the 0.17 pints on the tranfer case.
From my observations of the hardware, and due to the fact that the gearbox filled up with the specified amount of oil in spite of using both fill holes for adding oil, I do believe that the two chambers are directly connected. By the way, I let the gearbox drain overnight, and I let it sit for one hour after the gearbox fill hole started spilling out fresh oil to make sure I did not leave too much oil on the transfer case.

Joe D. -- I can't agree that the transfer gear reservoir gets "drained" with the main gear box oil (on either a 308 or TR). Although on a 308 you can fill-up both thru the upper opening on the transfer gear case, there are a few (usually nasty) ounces in the bottom of transfer gear reservoir (on both the 308 and TR) that can only be drained via the transfer gear reservoir drain plug -- check the figure in the "lubricants" section of the OM.

Hello,

When you drain the gear oil, the transfer case is drained also. So, when you re-fill the gear oil (9 qts) at the top plug on the transfer case, it will fill both the gearbox and the transfer case. It will start to over-flow when it has filled both of them. You need a 12mm allen to remove the upper and lower plugs. I bought a Craftsman large L shaped 12mm allen tool and a 12mm 6-sided 3/8th socket. I cut off a nub about 1 inch long from the 12mm allen at the short end of the elbow and epoxied it into the socket. Leave enough of the end to still use the tool as intended. This makes a special tool that would cost big bucks for about $10.

Caribe -- I just "refreshed" my TR transfer gear case sealing, and I'm now fairly sure that unlike 308s there is no fluid "connection" between the main gearbox reservior and the transfer gear reservior; therefore, they must be filled individually. See:

It's 9.5 ltr and 0.17 pints (which is about 0.1 ltr. but you can put 0.15 ltr. in).

I was in the same situation some time ago as mine also says 17 pints.

I am replacing the gearbox oil for Mobil 1 synthetic, but I am confused as to how much oil to put in. The owners manual says to fill the main gearbox until it reaches the level of the fill hole, but then it says to add another 17 pints through the clutch fill hole. I know this has to be wrong.
Does anybody know how much oil, if any, has to be put through the Clutch fill hole once the main gearbox chamber has been filled to the edge of its fill hole?

I read the gearbox oil replacement procedure for a 308 on the expensivecar.com site, and it mentions filling the main chamber to capacity (fill hole level), and then adding 0.17 Pints of gearbox oil through the clutch fill hole. would it be 0.17 pints instead of 17 pints for the Testarossa as well? 0.17 pints sounds a lot more realistic than an additional 17 pints.
