Steve, - That was also what I concluded after seeing the posts following mine in the prior thread that Craig references (below). There weren't any vertical marks other than the one I mentioned on either side of my PM 14 mark. I'm having to re-do my timing belts due to timing driver bearing failure. I'll see if I can't get & post a picture of my marks. Hmm, I think I took a photo last time, maybe I can find it & scan it in. Craig - I'd be interested in collaborating with you on updating Ric's expensivecar.com timing belt procedure. I've got some notes from my last timing belt change, including some tips Ric gave me. Also, I'm in the middle of changing the timing belt on my Son's Dodge Stealth, & have picked up a couple of good ideas from both the manuals & the Team3S 60K Service (aka timing belt change) procedure. BTW, compared to the Stealth, the 308 has lots of room to access just about everything. One thing the stealth did right tho was put the timing marks on the cam cover & cam pulleys. Eliminates the risk of acquiring an oil leak when all you need to do is a belt change... I'll try to take a pretty complete set of pictures to illustrate the revised procedure... BTW, take a look at the Team3S 60K service procedure, it's a very nice write-up with lots of photos: http://www.team3s.com/60k.htm I'd like to help do a 308 equivalent. Maybe we could get Ric to review it, or even co-author it.

Craig -- thanks for the clarification. I think the placement of the actual "|" mark relative to the character labels may vary some vs model/year (at least I think I recall my TR and ex-308 are different in that respect). |

TomD... My car has run perfectly since I purchased it a year and a half ago. I was slightly intimidated with starting the belt project as my first repair experience with my F car but I found that it was actually very easy -- especially since a lot of people have already written about how it's done. The key is to read the info several times and work slowly and carefully. I read all the archives too. The "measure twice and cut once" saying works real well here to be sure you don't accidently do something wrong (spelled expensive). |

Unfortunatly, the spaces that I put between the first "|" and the "PM|14" didn't show up. I'm sure you're correct about the vertical bar in front of PM14-- mine was about 1/2" to 3/4" BTDC(from memory). The following thread one person says use the mark to the "right" of PM14, the other says to use the one to the "left": http://server.ferrarichat.com/~ferrari/ferrarichat.com/discus/messages/112/1003.html I checked to be sure I had TDC on the vertical Bar between PM and 14. |

Craig -- I've not heard of anything other than "PM" being used for marking TDC (i.e., PM1-4 = TDC for cyl #1 of bank 1-4). Although sometimes the actual mark, "|", adds confusion looking like a letter. The extra mark you're showing in front of the PM is probably a nearby "AF" (BDC) mark, but I think sometimes they leave off the "AF" label. What different flywheel marks did you find referenced in the archive? My (limited) WSM exposure shows consistency: PM = TDC AF = BDC A5 = advance at 5000 RPM

Craig, I love how you casually say you were changing your belts, sorry have no additonal info but detailed procedures with pics would be great for ROb to post in the services section |

I was doing the belt thing on my car yesterday and searched the archives for information on finding the correct timing mark on the flywheel. All the references showed marks that were different than mine. Here is what I had: " | PM|14 " It ended up that the center vertical bar, between the "PM" and the "14" was the correct mark. This didn't agree with any other owner in the archives. Is the 328 different than the 308 or are all the flywheels custom marked? Item #2 ---- I found the use of the "PM14" mark unclear when timing the front four cylinders( next weekends project). If the crank is in the PM14 position, and the cams for the forward bank are lined up on the marks, Is this correct? After I'm done, I'm planning to update the timing belt procedure from expensivecar.com to add more details. |
