Good advice Tom, I use that proceedure because I feel it is easier on the entire power train.

This has got to be one of the best damn sounds these cars make. If it were broken I wouldn't fix it until the car stopped going into gear. First heard it on Scent of a woman. Mondial T stalls and Al Pacino says to slide it into second and pop the clutch. Just one more reason for people to slap that stupid grin off my face when I drive around town.

the brakes will stop the car but even if you don't down shift leave the car in gear until rpms get low, this keeps the brake servo assist functioning. You probably knew this but thought I would mention it

The normal whine (a light whistle) is the gear spinning up (or down) to match the speed of the shaft. This indicates that the syncronizers are doing their job. Nothing to worry about, IMHO.

Thanks, gear box oil is right, you hit it on the head though, the sound is only in the first three gears at slower speed downshifts. Don't down shift much now since reading a pretty good thread on the clutch wear. Surprise, breaks will actually stop the car.

The whine, is noticeable most in the first 3 gears on down shifting at lower speeds. If you downshift at a higher speed 4th gear will give you a small whine at first if you don't match the revs. If it is a growl, Start checking things like the oil level in the gear box. Matter of fact we can't hear the noise so I would check that anyway if you are in doubt.

Thanks all. I'm not worried since the car really runs well and shifts great. Just tempermental about keeping it in top shape. It is good to hear from other owners. I think it is just the gears doing what they are suppose to! It is great to have this resource to check things out.

Mine has a slight whine, but a normal sounding whine. I just had the trans apart and saw nothing wrong so I have few worries about it. Almost every manual transmission has a sound at certain speeds.

My 89 makes a noise I believe you are referring to, sort of a cross between a whine and a whistle. I consider it normal, have heard similar noises on other 328's and 308's as well. But without actually hearing your car, I don't know if it's the same.

I vaguely remember something like this in the 308. It's one of those things that if you hear it all day you wont think about it though so when you haven't driven in awhile you don't remember as much. My jeep whines a bit when being engaged, like you can hear the synchros matching, etc but it operates at such low rpm it isn't like the ferrari often times in sound. I would imagine this is normal whatever you're hearing. Usually you really know it when something is going bad or bad.

Anyone have a thought or response? I think that this may be normal, just want a confirmation.
Thanks

Do the gears on all 89 328's whine a little when down shifting, especially at lower speeds?
