Hi guys
Here is a better mouse trap
Fill a five gallon bucket with one gallon of windshield washer fluid. smeer some penutbutter one inch above the fluid inside the bucket. place a piece of wood for a ramp for the mice to walk up to the top of the rim of the bucket. They smell the penutbutter, jump in and drownd.
Cheep, easy, and will catch lots of mice with no smell or resetting

Randall...Rats are even more fun....you can SHOOT at them!!

John, I'm in N. Reading. Maybe we should plan a day to converge on Verell! (Maybe we should ask him too at some point)...

I saw a large rat last night on my back patio. Tonight I'm going to buy poison and traps to prevent a problem in the future.

Jonathan, I am planning to attend the get together on the Cape, if possible. We have family flying in that weekend, so I have to exercise caution making plans to keep peace in the house.
Would enjoy meeting at Verells home, always an experience. Hoping to put my 348 on his lift to help plan my upcoming major service, scheduled to start in the fall.
Are you in Reading or North Reading? Live close in Boxford.

John,
Are you coming to the Osterville Ferrarichat get-together in August? If not, how about we just meet at Verell's house sometime! (There I go again, inviting myself to Verell's house!)

Jonathan, Meet John Beaucher,
John, meet Jonathan Bird

I've been trying to get the 2 of you together, so far futilely. You'll find you have a lot more in common than just your philosophies on rodent control.

John,
Forgive me for laughing hysterically at the image of a blackened mouse being shot out of your car's exhaust like a bullet! But you are right...mice can do serious expensive damage. My mom has a dog that urinates in the garage all the time. The place ought to have no mice within miles...I caught 4 last week. No mystical urine/electronics/soap shavings for me. I'm killing the little bastards!

Mice and Cars, a subject near and dear to my heart. As I have chronicled in the past, I have had several poor experiences with rodents.
8 years ago they nested in my 308-exhaust system. On a fine winter day I decided to start the 308, warm a bit and drive around the driveway to work the clutch, brakes etc. Shortly after starting, smoke billowed out of the exhaust tips followed by flames. Minute or so later a well-blackened mouse was shot, like a gun, out of the pipe, into the snow. Ran the car until all was burned out, standing ready with a fire extinguisher in hand. No cost but the battle lines were drawn.
6 years ago, Porsche 930 stored in a CoverIt temporary shelter. Surrounded by Bobcat urine, if I remember correctly, and filled with mothballs. Checked on the cars condition and noted what I thought was white mold where the carpet is glued to the floorboards, under the pedals. Not mold, it was the carpet mat left after the mice removed all the black fiber. Could not find the mothballs but could still smell them. The little devils had dragged the mothballs into the center tunnel where they were nested. Resorted to the age-old mousetrap baited with whatever cheese I had that evening with a glass of wine. Sold the Porsche in the spring, estimate damage cost at $2k.
3 years ago my wife was driving to NY in her Lexus, 1st trip after a long winter. Drove a mile and the check engine light came on. Scheduled service was due at Lexus. Service manager called to ask if I had a rodent problem and then advised calling my insurance agent. Damage total $4k and out of commission for a month.
These are the major battles. They have eaten holes in my Hondas grass catch bags, wiring in my tractor etc etc etc.
Used the electronic pest controls this past winter with apparent success. Still set the conventional traps but saw no activity. Lucky??
An enemy to be reckoned with.

Mice love sports cars because it's easy to get from the floor onto the chasis. Mice can destroy a wire harness in no time.

Nothing works like 50 cent traps at hardware stores. Buy a bunch. Put them around the garage, under the car near lower chasis components and in the car anywhere you find evidence of them. Check them every couple of days.

For those in the snow belt, as I am in, it seems that the mice problem is worse in the Fall. Here they are trying to find a warmer place for the Winter. I don't seem to have any problem in the summer.

Hence, the best time to concetrate on mice "removal" would be in the Fall. Once Winter starts, they have already found a home.....someplace.

I would suspect that those living in the South don't have much of a mouse problem......am I wrong?

You don't spray the car, just the perimeter of the storage area. In my case it's a domed tent like structure made by COVER-IT:

www.cover-it.com

so spraying the perimeter is no big deal The cover comes down & then lies flat on the ground for about 8" to 10". I'll just spray under this.
I don't care if it smells a bit. The shelter is ventilated, so it shouldn't make the cars smell.

I'm also laying a plastic tarp down as a moisture barrier. The tarp is about 10' wider & longer than the shelter so the tarp will be brought up the sides, front & rear. Again, I can spray the outside of it near the ground. Hopefully that will cause the little critters to want to be elsewhere & they won't chew thru the tarp.

I might as well add ZEST shavings to the same area. Just hope the 2 smells don't neutralize each other(LOL)...
In the case of a garage, you'd have to figure out the critter ingress places & spray them.

Verell: How do you get rid of the smell when you want to use the car? While I have heard that animal urine helps, I would not use it.

When I bought my COVER-IT the salesman recommended spraying just inside with coyote urine. Claimed they won't come near the smell of a serious predator.

Coyote urine is allegedly available thru hunting goods stores.

Im going to try it this fall, along with ultrasonics & the 'just one bite' poisoned bait.

Living in a farm area where there are lot of field mice I have some experieince in this area. If you want something that repels mice get a bar of Zest soap and a potato peeler (it has to be Zest brand soap. Any brand potato peeler will do). Peel up the bar of soap and place the peelings where you don't want any mice. Bear in mind this is soap, so don't put it where it will get wet, or you will have a mess on your hands.

When you get tired of your car smelling like the inside of your shower get some "Just One Bite" rodent control pellets. Don't use this stuff if you have kids or pets around. This stuff basically dehydrates the rodent, so after they have ingested it they go looking for water. They die somewhere between where you put the stuff and the water source (which means they probably won't die in your car). Even if they do die in your car they are so dehydrated all that's left is a little puff of fur.

I use empty (and cleaned) tuna fish cans. Put in some pellets and place one each in the trunk, under each seat, in the engine compartment. It takes a few days to work, so keep replenishing the cans. While they are being killed the mice take the pellets back to wherever they gather and share them with their friends, which is good.

I have no relation to the company which markets the stuff, blah, blah, blah.

I leave traps in my garage year round, and find that peanut butter works like nothing else. Also, do not worry about refreshing it. I recently found a rat trap that I had set up months ago with a large rat caught in it...my cat has caught two mice in the past couple weeks so I set up more fresh mouse traps and a new rat trap...get the old spring type like you saw in the old Warner Bros. cartoons...they work fine.
;-) You'd be suprised, those of you who have no evidence of mice, put out a couple traps, and bet you catch some in a week or two...

I live on a farm, and strongly believe in peanut butter, vs cheese bait, to catch the mice. Make sure the peanut butter is kept fresh......renew after a few days.

You may want to place moth balls in various places in the car.......I have been told, by farmers, that this works.

My mom just had a terrible problem with mice in her garage nesting in her Corvette. The cat was useless. They made a nest in the air cleaner (must have enjoyed the gasoline fumes) and the glove box!! I put mouse traps baited with peanut butter in the glovebox and airbox (with the filter removed to make room) as well as a few around the garage. I caught 4 in one week. I think I will just leave traps around and check them periodically. If you can figure out where they are getting in, seal it up!

DO NOT use poison. The mice will eat it and die someplace inconvenient, like in the walls or the recesses of the car, and stink the place up forever.

Aha sonic repulsors: Yoko Ono tapes.

If that doesn't get rid of them, then go for the traps and put them out of their misery.

How many would you need to make a mousehair dash?

The mice here in Upstate NY really like the "chunky-style" peanut butter...but are not so fond of cheese.

You can buy those small ultrasonic devices whish are supposed to scare away rodents, they plug into a power supply. If you do go back to the old fashioned mousetrap, then don't believe the old theory that mice like cheese, take it from someone with exprience, put a dab of peanut butter on there, and if you do have mice they will go for it !!

Does anyone know of a product that will deter mice from nesting in stored cars, they can do serious amounts of damage to cables and hoses, usually in difficult to get at places!Cats around the place do not seem to scare them off, any ideas would be most helpful...
