I'm pretty sure Ric used Leatherique. As to leatherique's durability, My seats have held up well for almost 2 seasons of daily driving. Only problem area was where I tried to do some grain simulation using crack filler. Subsequently learned that's not a good idea. I'm assuming you mean lacquer based dyes when you say 'solvent based'. They turn rock hard after a few years & are what makes the leather feel like cadboard. Also, they seal so tight, nutrients like rejuvinator oil or hyde food can't penetrate to soften & nourish the leather. Connoly used them during the late '70s & early '80s, then went to the newer acrilic based dyes. That's why most redye jobs require stripping the old dye off. |

Jim. Will be interested in how you get the dye color issue sorted out. I am getting ready to redye by 328 seats with their color 3218. |

Jeff and Group, Thanks for the comments. I'm in the process of doing some leather work myself. I purchased the Leatherique kit w/matching dye (sent leather sample to them), but the die is so off I stripped it off the part I was working on. Luckily, I started with an small part before moving on. Dr. Petito I'll check out Home Depot for their solution. To be fair I'm going to contact Leatherique on Monday to see how they plan to fix the dye match. Thanks, Jim Hilton |

Ric Rainbolt tinted his with a very inexpensive tint. Don't know where he got it. However, I have re"dyed" the interior leather on my 308. The job turned out very well but I am not very happy with the durability. I understand that it is almost impossible to get the same level of wearability by doing it yourself but I would like to hear from anyone that has used a solvent based "dye" to do the leather. I used a product called Molecubond to paint the steering wheel leather and it is perfect looking and tough as nails. If I had black interior I would have done my whole job with it. Can not say enough...dries REALLY fast and no runs. Bought the stuff at pep boys |

Hans, it was water based and it mixed easily with the dye. Dan |

Dan: What type of paint did you use? Acrylic? Water color? (I'm not an artist, so I don't know what is commonly available at such stores.) |

Jeff, I can help here. I used leatherique too but all I wanted to do was re dye the drivers side bolster and leave the rest of the seat original. I sent them a piece from the underside of the seat but the topside/bolster was a bit more yellow to my eye (due to sun etc). I didnt need much as I was only dyeing the bolster but it had to match PERFECTLY as the rest of the seat wasnt going to be touched. I went to an art store and bought bright white and bright yellow paint. I separated out about one quarter of the dye (in case I messed up I still had original dye) and to it added a drop or two of yellow or white paint to the dye and put it on a small part of the bolster and repeated until I felt I had an exact match. The human eye can distinguish 7 MILLION shades so this took about 20 tries (3 days). The amount of the paint added was small so it did not have an effect on the durabilty of the dye. A year an a half later it still looks perfect. It was not detected by the Cavallino judges this year. Patience is the key but you should get a perfect result. Dan |

George. Did you bring a jug of Leatherique dye into Lowes and ask for a color change from what was sent to you? I have been told that 3218 is the proper dyes for my Beige interior. |

They are all acrylic polymer based and can be tinted to match with tints available at Lowe's ,Home Depot, etc. I have done a couple of cars with this system ....all with excellant results. Ask them to computer match your leather and then use the formula to tint your base or have a pint of flat enamel made up and blend. |

I have been going back and forth with Leatherique almost since I bought my 328 a year ago to get a proper color match for my seats, the last time I sent part of my seat belt bolster to match the color. The gal at Leatherique stated my original color is the 3218 Saddle and sent my part back and another bottle of dye, I test dyed the part and the 3218 color they sent me seems almost a Peach/Tan color vs the Tan/Brown. I am getting charged $45.00 everytime I send the dye back to rematch the color and it seems I am getting nowhere, Does anyone know what you can use to re-tint the Leatherique Dye? Is it acrylic based or ? Thanks |
