I removed mine AND my manifold plugs and simply plugged the holes.

Yes, Steve Magnusson has an article on the subject that was first published in Cavalino...I think it is in the archives here somewhere....

Several people have reported that extended use of no air pump resulted in the exhaust manifold air injectors beeing burned beyond use. This would be a problem if you need to smog certify your car ....

Dissenting opinion:

I was doing like "The Don" where I had the belt disconnected, and would reconnect every month or so. I found that there really was no perceptable performance difference with the belt on or off, so I just decided to leave it on.

I've heard that if you don't plug the ports in the manifold it will lead to trouble. Do a search in the archives, I'm sure there are more posts dealing with the subject.

Mine was taken off by the original owner and the hoses were pluged. I don't see any reason to have it functioning. Just one more thing to rob power.

My pump and belt were missing when I bought my car. It also sems fine. My mechanic said it was ok to get a new pump and put it on if I liked as there is no real change in hp.

Ijust left the belt off on mine, but hear that reconnecting periodically is good to do. One mechanic told me to leave it on, but just keep the tension loose, so if it seizes the belt will pop off rather than mess up the valve train...

My entire air pump was removed by the previous owner and the holes in the exhaust manifold were plugged. I haven't got the slightest idea what difference it made but it runs fine without it and one less thing taking up space in that tiny engine compartment!

My belt fell off awhile ago. It does find it's way back on every two weeks for a day.

Has anyone disconnected their air pump on a 308? I have and 83qv and my mechanic told me to just take off the belt. It will run better. Less stress on the exhaults valves and guides. It seems to run a lot better. He also told me to put it back on once in a while to keep the carbon from building up in the air injection nozzles/rails.
