One more question for Tom/Joe:
On the end of the clutch housing is a small cover held by 4 - 8mm nuts on studs. It covers what apears to be a large spanner diven retainer nut....holding the flywheel into the bearing pressed into the clutch housing. Inside of the spanner driven retainer nut, is a big set screw. THE QUESTION is: is that setscrew (about a 12mm thread size +/-) used only as a jamming/locking device, or does it somehow set the end play for the transmission input shaft??

The manuals (parts or shop) do not address the set screw at all. I wouldn't sweat it but I recently had to change a damaged cover and thus the dimensional stack would have been effected. The screws are always torqued tight...so I concluded it was a locking device....but always wondered.

Tom,

You forgot the last step:

Call the towing service and have the car towed to the dealer because something doesn't work :-)

Do'h!!! The last post was for a none f1 car!! The removal will be identical though. Not to sure about resetting anything..I did one on an f1 car a few times and it worked just fine.

Clutch replacement 355:
1. jack-up rear of car and support on jack stands.
2. remove both rear wheels
3.remove rear most splash sheilds for wheel wells on both sides of the car.
4. disconnect the connectors for the licence plate lights and side marker lights.
5. Locate the 8 nuts securing the rear bumper to the car. 4 are 13mm and 4 are 17mm.
6. remove the bolts and remove bumper(use a helper for this).
7.once bumper is removed you'll see a heat sheild held on by 2 10mm bolts, remove.
8. working under the car, undo the cat converters form the bottom of the muffeler(2 clamp looking things with 10mm nuts and 5mm allen head(hex) blots.)
9. in the engine compartment remove the air boxes and ducting to access the muffler heat sheild(held on by 8? 10mm nuts) rmove this sheild.
10. Looking down at muffler over top of clutch housing you will see a valve with a vacuume line going to the top of it. This valve is attached to the muffler, remove the 2 13mm bolts(can be a bit of a pain sometimes!!.
11. slightly put rearward pressure on the muffler and remove the valve so it does not fall.
12. Undo the mounts at either side of the muffer and lower exhaust out the bottom of the car(heavy so use a helper).
13. you can now see the clutch housing!!
14.Remove all blots(3 for the starter) and nuts 10 of them (I think) all 13mm.
15.The housing should slide of the studs with slight pressure applied through the vents of the clutch housing. This piece is also heavy to be ready when it comes off.(helper good for this aswell).
16. Once the housing is off you will see 13mm blots holding down the pressure plate.Remove all of them.
17. slighty pry up on the pressure plate evenly tto release the dowel pins. You can now remove the disc.
18. install is reverse of removal.
19. once installed and have taken for test drive..have a nice cold beer and relax!!

While mechanically it wouldn't be much different than a 348/355, you have to remember there are additional sensors in the F1 system that will need R&R, and perhaps even reprogramming via an SD-1 tool. Especially for the clutch sensor and it's initial point of slip setting.

Check out the thread:

http://www.ferrarichat.com/discus/messages/112/252357.html?1057669426

This thread is about a 348 clutch, the F355 was based on this, and the F1 was an updated version. Its not that hard, but does take several hours, so don't scrimp on parts as long as you are in there.

The F1 TO system has a better feel in the clutch pedal than the older manual TO system. Something about teflon seals.

My mechanic says it's very simple "yea I know everthings simple if you know what your doing"
But has anyone done their own??

I definately have the opportunity to do it w/ him,he has no problem w/ that ,which is probably what I'll opt to do when the time comes.

TIA
